The insight and experience from members on this forum is outstanding. After doing some reading here it seems for -

AFROTC...if you score a 26 ACT composite, do well in the interview, chances are good you’ll get a scholarship.

AROTC...gives out the most scholarships by far but has the lowest minimums, by far. Army superscores, AF does not. 19 ACT is minimum to qualify.

Let’s say a person is 25% class rank, 26 ACT 3.4 GPA, Lacrosse Team Captain, lifeguard, 7 AP classes, standard ECs, crushes “The Interview”, nearly maxes fitness tests and wants to major in computer science. It seems this individual would shake out amongst the services this way...on a 1-10 score

AROTC - 9
AFROTC - 8.5
NROTC/MO - 8.5
NROTC - 6

Does this hypothetical pass the sniff test?

Sniff test....sure but things change all the time and quite honestly, you never know what they are looking for. My son had a 25 ACT, 3.7 (non-weighted), wrestling team captain, league champion, 3-4 APs, 300+ on APFT and max score on the interview. He was passed over by the Army for a *National* scholarship but had schools on his application contact him directly offering 4 year ROTC scholarships.

I'll let others with more knowledge but I think with a 26 ACT and 3.4 GPA, the odds for MC/NROTC & AFROTC are probably 5 and below on your scale.

K2 - Thanks for the reply and insight. Did your son take one of the ROTC scholarships that was offered to him directly from the schools? I take it, those would be the silver bullets that the unit CO holds and can offer at his discretion? Yes, you’re correct, never know who is reviewing or scoring your record.

It all depends on the competition. All one can do is their best, remember it IS a competition. Always be sure to work backup plans.

Yes, he ended up at Boise State....and yes, you are correct about the "silver bullet" analogy.
