Ask a Doolie Anything!

NOLIFEPILOT... You are an amazing young person. A helpful, hardcharger! Keep up the good work!

Depend on your squad, the year, the weather, and some other factors. I would make sure you can run an AFT (1.5 mile) well under the average time for your gender and that you can run 5-6 miles at a somewhat slower pace. As long as you aren't super slow and won't hurt yourself, you'll be prepared just fine. The only thing that is hard past that is running in uniform/with gear, but that isn't too bad if you're already in decent shape.

Does Italian count toward the modern language requirements in academics?

In the academics page of the admissions website (academyadmissions) it says that you need to get 2 years of modern foreign language? I'm taking Italian, but it doesn't say on the website if that could count for this requirement... does it?

Italian will be fine-it's not offered here, but they basically just want to know that you're taking a language that's actually spoken and not Latin (although that's not 100% a dq for admission or anything, just another way to strengthen your application.)

Sorry, but what's a dq?

How does the rank system work in the Academy?

How does the grade system work in the Academy? I know what the grades are, but I want to know HOW cadets promote.

It is based on class year and what position you hold. For example, a 3rd class cadet will be a C/SSgt. A 2nd class cadet can be a C/TSgt through C/CMSgt depending on their job for the semester. Generally, within the squadron most 2 degrees will be C/TSgt or C/MSgt. Most firsties will be C/Capt or C/Maj. Group and wing staff jobs usually go with C/SMSgt or C/CMSgt for 2 digs and C/LtCol or C/Col for firsties.

...unless they've changed things in the past couple years.

How do the uniforms work in the academy?

i.e. ribbons and ABUs. Like, in pictures I see that some cadets have ribbons while others do not. Also is there a guide to all uniform things?

Ribbons are earned for various things. Most cadets, if they haven't served prior to coming to usafa, have only two: one for completing air force basic training and one for joining the military in a time of conflict. For ABUs, your rank is indicated by metal grade insignia on your collar. Freshmen have none, sophomores have one chevron, juniors will have anywhere from 2 chevrons to 5 chevrons, and firsties will have anywhere from 1 to 6 bars. The same is basically true for your shoulder boards with a few slight variations. If you Google "usafa Cadet rank" the first picture will show you everything. The Air Force guide to uniform wear is AFI 36-2903, and usafa has a specialized guide that's in the Cadet Sight Picture.

Admissions Process

Can someone explain the steps of the application process with grade years (freshman, sophomore, etc.) and months for a regular high school student? Thanks

High School Student

I was hoping you could tell me what type of student you were in high school including things such as grades, extracurricular activities, and sports so I can get a better idea of what I need to accomplish to be a competitive candidate when applying to the academy.
Thanks, hoping to hear from you soon!

A language course, chemistry, calculus, engineering, English, 2 pe courses, behavioral science, physics, computer science, history, that's my schedule for the year. I'm not sure if I'm leaving some out or not.

Would the Academy let you go back all the way to Trig or is Calc the lowest you start out at? I have taken both Trig and Calc, but I really want to go back to Trig next year if possible to get a more solid foundation in it.
