One thing I vividly remember from my senior year of high school was seeking out any and all information about The Citadel that I could find... and what I found is that talking to current knobs was a good source of information. Therefore, I am opening this thread up for anyone with questions. Obviously I've only completed one semester of knob year so far, but I can try my best to answer any questions. So ask away :)

(Just a side note, I'm a female, so if you have any gender-specific questions and don't want to ask them openly, you can always PM me.)

how much time do you have each day to study/do homework on average? what would you say has been the most difficult part of your first semester? thanks

Hi! There is set time in the evening called "Evening Study Period" for studying, it runs from 1950 to 2230 to assure adequate study time for the knobs. Upperclassmen are not supposed to mess with you during this time. If you would rather study in the library (I love to), that is always an option. Depending on how many hours you are taking, you might also have some free time before dinner mess for homework.

The hardest part was adjusting to knob life. It's not easy, and it takes some getting used to. There is a lot to learn in a small amount of time, so you feel the pressure and stress at times. Juggling classes can be difficult too if you do not figure out how to properly manage your time. It is nothing you can't handle though, it gets better as time goes on and you learn to not get stressed by the small stuff.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask them here or PM me, I'll try to help in any way I can.

Hi, what about the use of electronics? Like free time to use your cell phone, computer,...? How is the structure of weekends?

Citadel for better or worse is admitting very large classes. My son just finished Hell er Challenge week - his class was over 820.

GPA and SAT seem acceptable, though I would not expect a lot in the way of Scholarships at those levels .

Good luck to you. The road less traveled to wear the ring is worth it.

Weekends are of two types

Open and Closed, though the difference for knobs is minimal. Closed weekends are those with Saturday Morning Inspection , Home Football games or other significant , Corps wide military duties on Saturday.

For knobs in general you may leave campus , in uniform of course , from last duty Friday maybe 1800 or so until midnight. On Saturday from last duty again until midnight this varies widely. It could , very rarely, be 0600 or it could be as late as 1800 after a football game. Sundays are pretty open from 0600 to 1800 BUT 1800 means on the line in formation at 1800 .

As you earn privileges either though seniority or performance you get overnight and weekend leave

I’m not expecting much but regarding mess, online it says that they are accepting of vegetarians/vegans and states, “Those who prefer alternative proteins can feel confident they are receiving ample nutrition with the dedicated vegan and vegetarian station..” Is this privilege extended to knobs or are they forced to eat what is served?

You're going to get Aramark food and not necessarily a lot of it and quality is said to be marginal at best.

As a knob I would not expect to get a lot of food in general and especially not special food. If that's a major issue to you I'd look at a more traditional college as opposed to a corps of cadets program and especially the more intense ones to be had at Citadel and VMI
