Ask a Mid!

Wow, pallen92x, you can't even say you're sorry without casting dispersions...I only wish I was cadre at WP this summer as your 'know it all' attitude and big mouth would make you a special project...and all that knowledge without spending a single day at an SA. Go back to the proper forum with your 'observations' as this one is for future MIDS with legitimate questions...

Easy Dad....I think he gets it, and if he doesn't - he will this summer :) The truth is, the attitude is pretty typical of 18 year old kids, and to some degree a desired trait. It takes time and experience to temper the youthful enthusiasm.

That's odd...I don't think I was making any attempt at an apology.

I feel for you, pops...I really do...You were expecting to see some kick-butt, hardcore event at your kid's I-Day like you see in those "Parris Island Indoc" movies (ie. Full Metal Jacket, Boys From Company C - RIP R. Lee Ermey)...only to be disappointed in seeing your kid strolling the Yard with a dolly....

...I can see your disappointment and frustration. No need to be defensive.

Dude, I don't give a damn what school you go or will be going to at this point, because now you're just acting like a punk kid hiding behind a keyboard who has zero respect for your elders. Posting in this forum with the sole purpose of getting reactions is the definition of being a troll.

I'm sure there is something more productive than this you could be doing to prepare yourself for this summer. Congratulations on the appointment and best of luck.

I can see the Army's version of Fan Room Counseling in this lads future. Pallen92x, I realize you aren't receptive to any advice from the "Pops" generation but take some as you wish in any event. I would consider belaying that attitude you're displaying well before you show up on day one. You may be the big kid in the valley now but you are getting ready to walk onto a bigger valley than you could imagine. Go forth and do great things but hang onto humility throughout the journey.

Dude, my DD is 29 days from Plebes No More. You’re still wondering if you can survive Beast. Life sucks if you just barely twist an ankle. Best wishes. BTW, you mentioned the ship collisions and such... Real sailors did die in case you didn’t know.

Okay, Ill ask one to get this back on track:

@Usnavy2019 - Plebes will be inducted on Thursday Jun 28th this year.
July 4th is the following Wednesday.

Do Plebes (and their Detailers) get a respite from all the fun of their first week, to watch the fireworks over the Bay?
(with Reef Points in hand, of course).

And here is a follow-on just for you. Have YOU considered being a PS Detailer, or a striper in another capacity (NASS, STEM, etc) during the summer?

I distinctly remember my July 4th during Plebe Summer from 2 years ago. We were indeed brought out onto Rip Miller Field(PEP field) where patriotic music blared as we watched the fireworks over the Bay. I remember the Detailers having a good time as well... of course we were back at at 0530 the next morning for PEP, not to mention that our Detailers "wanted their time back" after allowing us to enjoy the previous night's festivities.

This past summer we were taken out to Rip Miller for the fireworks on the 4th, as well. However, it rained before the city of Annapolis could set them off, so the show was cancelled and we proceeded to go back to Mother B to have some "grey space." All mids, current and former, know what grey space mostly entails...

Additionally, I recently received a billet for a NASS detailer this summer. I am pumped for it, as I look forward to taking on a mentorship/leadership role finally. Plebe year can become very frustrating sometimes due to the fact that many people come here to be leaders. However, we must all go through our "plebe" phase to learn how to be a good follower first.

There is afternoon time for intramurals each day where athletes go to their sports and intramurals are played against other companies. The detainees try to make it a little fun and slightly more relaxed for intramurals. If you have a fall sport such as soccer and football the end of Plebe Summer schedule will slightly change. Football has the most dramatic change as they get moved to another area in Bancroft and the team Gunny manages them until the end of Plebe Summer. Soccer players and such will head to their team practices at designated times and miss some training evolutions, especially things like PEP and drill (usually doing 2 a days at this point). If your sport isn’t in season like basketball or baseball then it’s regular schedule until the end of Plebe Summer.

@Usnavy2019, thank you for starting this thread, and also for your willingness to help. We just visited USNA last week, and my son (who received an appointment but was undecided) accepted the offer right away after CVW. He's super enthusiastic about this journey, and he understands it is going to be challenging.

My question is about mentorship/counseling if there's such a thing, and I don't mean just for academics or career planning, which are of course crucial. I want to know if there is someone at the Academy that he can talk to in case he's feeling down or lost. Is it mostly an upperclass midshipman in his company that he would reach out to, or is there a center at USNA similar to what other universities have? May be I'm just being a worrisome parent, because really, what else would I do until June 28?
There are lots of people for your Mid to talk to if they need to. The Chaplain's office is loaded with wonderful resources. Apparently, the Jewish Chaplain is a very popular go-to guy. It's all non-denominational btw. Good luck to your son!

Hey everyone,

This thread is aimed at appointees, but all players are welcome. I'm a Youngster (3/C, Class of 2020... vice the username) so I can speak to both Plebe and upperclass life.

All questions are welcome and I'm willing to answer just about anything. The only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

I'll be on a few times a day to answer questions, but my response times may vary due to my busy schedule.

Fire away!

Hey! Any suggestions on what I can do to prep for Plebe Summer? Also would like to know what I can bring on I day and what I should ask mom and dad to mail in a care package. Thanks!

And- What does DS/DD mean?

Just a bit lost:(
