Ask Me Anything - Perspective from a Current Plebe

I'm wondering about the attitude the academy has in general towards minorities, including race minorities, people of different sexual orientations, females, liberals I guess, etc. I know the general assumption is that the academies tend towards the conservative side, but I wanted to see what a first-hand opinion is. So, how accepting is the academy towards minority demographics?

The Academy is pretty conservative for a liberal arts college, and relatively more conservative than other colleges in my experience. But the Academy is generally a very accepting place for everyone. You will get extremes on both sides and no matter where you go, you may run into jerks and bigots. USNA draws from every nook and cranny from the nation (and even some foreign students, as well!) so you will see a lot of diverse reactions to many issues. Many of my classmates have widely different political and religious views and backgrounds!

Does your company have a strategy or plan for engaging Herndon?

The company that finishes first in Sea Trials gets to attack the Herndon monument first. So the strategy is to win Sea Trials!

And honestly it takes more than 1 company to tackle Herndon. Every year Plebes think they will work some strategy and attack it tactically with a plan. Never works. It's end being a mad rush, piles of Plebes covered in sweat, lard and water and then finally they build a stable enough pyramid to get someone up there.

What is the one thing that surprised you the most?

Has anyone in your company left? If so, what was the reason?
Get in shape, and stay in shape. I've heard this Dant has yet to retain someone who came before him with a separation recommendation for failing the physical test. Also, the Academy is a very accepting place which I've always argued is a conservative trait. My son's friends come from everywhere and are very diverse. Pull your own weight; be a good Midshipman; and you will find acceptance no matter who you are.

My DS just returned from a CVW on 4-30 and loved it! His dragger plebe told him he had previously been zapped for a violation of the honor code (cheating ) and was still serving his sentence for said offense. His sentence the dragger referred to as going to "tours", and over the weekend he was gone from DS on several occasions for approximately 2 hours at a time. Does anyone
know what "tours" is? DS did not feel comfortable asking dragger for more info, given the circumstances. Thanks.

They march around with their rifles. It used to be 50 minutes at a time and then 10 minute break. I marched a lot of tours in my day.

As someone who is currently marching tours now for a parking violation, nothing has changed since Hoop's time here at the academy. Still uniform inspection and 30-50 minutes of marching w/rifle depending on how nice the Senior Enlisted is that day. And on weekends we have multiple musters/uniform inspections throughout the day instead of yet one muster a day during week days.

And I think I saw someone ask about this: liberty travel policy is that you're allowed to travel 150 miles away from the academy without having to submit a special request chit through your CoC.

GoNavy, sorry about the restriction!

We could be given tours and/or restriction. Sometimes we just got tours and sometimes we got both. Restriction had 3 musters a day during the week and up to 5 on the weekends (4 planned and 1 surprise). I remember we used to march our tours at the slowest pace humanly possible. Tourists loved the pictures.

Tours were marched right outside my office window, on Red Beach, deck 6-0. A total waste of time - time that could be spent on schoolwork, relaxing, personal PT, napping. That was the real pain.

Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about what life is like during plebe summer or at the Academy! I am currently a member of the class of 2019, and am willing to share tips and tricks for preparing for and getting through the year that my classmates and I have found useful.

Thanks! I'm going for a CVW, and I heard that they are doing some workouts for Sea Trials. What would that entail?

This thread is over a year old, and the original poster has not been active. You would probably have better luck starting a new thread, but let's hope you get some answers.

Here's something to read:
https://www.usna.edu/SpecialEvents/SeaTrials.php

Take some PT gear, good running shoes, check the weather so you know whether to take an extra layer.

As always, my advice is to read every page, dropdown and link at USNA.edu - most answers can be found there.

If you google "Naval Academy Sea Trials," you can see other articles and YouTube videos. You can figure out what kind of activities for which they are preparing.

I was just curious as to exactly how I-Day medical processing works, as in what do they check, how rigorous is the physical, etc.

When did you start your application process? I'm trying to get ahead of the game and am curious as to how the timing of things worked out for someone who got an appointment. Thanks!!

The application process starts one of two ways, according to the USNA site.
  1. Complete and submit an application for Summer Seminar
  2. Complete and submit the Preliminary Application (applying to NASS replaces this step)
In either case, the admissions board will determine how strong of a candidate you'll be and whether or not to grant you candidate status. I applied to NASS and that's how my application started.
