Ask me anything

Between USAFA and USNA. What would be your recommendation? Why?

I don't mean to barge in here, but I was being recruited by USAFA for a sport-USNA was not recruiting me for this sport. I picked to pursue USNA because of all of the options that were available. Although USAFA has slightly more majors (30 vs 25), the service selection options that USNA presents are unmatchable from any other academy. USAFA seems to have 4 options (may be more but from the USAFA website)- Pilot, CSO, ABM or Drones. USNA has 24 different career paths-although some may be limited to female such as Navy Seals. If one is still interested in flight, USNA has Navy pilot, Navy flight officer, and USMC pilot.

The one you feel suits you best in terms of SA culture, Service culture, where you serve, career options (especially alternate career paths if you don’t get your dream path), other intangible factors. They are both great places, alike in many ways, different in many ways. Even if you like the idea of Navy overall, if you can’t imagine large chunks of your life spent on the water, under the water or over the water, you won’t be happy.

Listen to your gut.

You can always apply for a junior year exchange semester to scratch the itch.

I know a number of people who had to get waivers, and this is done on a case-by-case basis. It can take any amount of time for a wavier to be granted, and it often depends on the volume of paperwork that is being processed at the time.
thank you!

Actually, women are now able to service select SEALs, if they meet the requirements. To date, this hasn't happened, but it is possible. I believe that every USN career path is now open to women although, as noted, physical and other requirements exist for certain warfare specialties.

Yes, they are all open now.

There are a lot of threads on this Forum devoted to this very topic. Get accepted to both, then I recommend doing your due diligence, including meeting and talking with current officers of both, then make your decision. To emphasize, this isn't really an issue of choosing a college as much as deciding what branch of the Service you want to serve in.

Also, the fact you are considering these two schools/services suggests you may want to fly. Consider what other options appeal to you in each service if you're not able to fly for some reason (physical qualification, aptitude, class rank), etc.

Could you please clarify what it means by junior year exchange semester. I get a semester at another academy but Do you mean we could switch between Academies if we like the options in other Academy !!!

You cannot change academies. It’s an exchange semester at another academy and then you return back to your SA. There are very limited cross commissioning opportunities. There are lots of threads on that on this forum never count on that being a path to a commission as it’s rare. Usually there has to be a compelling reason why, a lot of leg worn to advocate it on your behalf and it’s also a numbers game (needs of the service come first).
