Ask Us (current cadets) Anything

why do you think you got accepted to the prep school instead of the academy first? Was it your test scores or gpa or something like that?

I was previously enlisted in the AF and a few years out of school. Sometimes admissions likes to get the priors up to speed in academics again before throwing them in the difficult environment that is the Academy.

My DD didn't have the 7 chew rule. I think mostly because she lost over 10lbs during BCT and she was already near the minimum weight. They made her drink 2 Boosts/night before going to bed just so she had enough calories for the next day.

After BCT, she was able to easily gain those 10lbs back.

Is the seven chew rule going away this year's basic? Last year it was in place for 2019s. I know cause I got called out on it quite a few times

It was not officially in place in any capacity. Sounds like you had some cadre who enforced some personal standards. The idea behind the 7 chew rule is that if someone asks you a question while you are chewing then you can finish and respond in a reasonable amount of time. This is particularly important in formal settings.

Asked this question over on service academy preparatory school forum, but thinking you can help me. Please. Now mind you I am planning ahead, with fingers crossed for DS who is still in candidate status, and am trying to find a USAFA prep school tshirt similar to what you find at the visitor gift store for the academy. The seniors at DS school are wearing shirts for the school they are going to in the Fall. I have ordered him a plan B school shirt, which he can always give to a friend, but am trying to find out where I would get a prep school shirt in case that's where he gets in. I have called the gift store - nothing. Looked on AOG online - nothing. Gift store said try the px or call the prep school. When he is through being in a holding pattern waiting on USAFA, I am sure he would love to have some kind of prep shirt if that's where he is lucky enough to go. Thanks so much!

I am trying to decide (If I can get in) what option is best for me between the AFA, SMCs such as Virginia Tech, and just doing ROTC.
Did any of you look into all 3? If so, what made you choose the AFA over the other two?

I have read before online that there is a program that lets cadets leave early for Thanksgiving break in order to do some kind of presentation at their home school. Does this still exist and are 4 degrees allowed to participate? What does that process entail?

I have a weaker left ankle that I have sprained in the past. Can I bring my ankle brace for extra support to basic? Do I need a letter from the Doctor?

If a brace helps you, be sure to bring it so you can participate with your classmates to the fullest extent and avoid injury. However, if your ankle is a recurrent problem for you or is bothering you right now, it's a little concerning. Look into doing some physical therapy over the next couple of months so you are taking proper care of your body to ensure readiness for BCT. If you come into basic injured or injure yourself during training, you risk the possibility of being medically turned back.

Be very careful about this. If it's determined that you NEED the brace, then they will turn you back.

Also keep in mind that you will be wearing boots most of the time. Those should help brace your ankles quite a bit. I would also think that the brace wouldn't fit inside the boot.

Start doing a lot of ankle-strengthening exercises NOW. Search online, there are several suggestions for weak ankles.

I did not look into any other programs.

This is called the "Grass Roots" program. It still exists but not everyone can just decide to participate. Leadership will send an email to cadets who are from areas of the nation which are under represented at the Academy asking if they would like to do the program. If you are not from one of these areas then the option is not available to you.

I had a couple of options after high school, but not quite in the same capacity (each of our stories are different, after all). After receiving my rejection from USAFA, I had to decide between Norwich and Eastern Michigan University. I chose EMU for several reasons. For me, joining the Army ROTC unit and later transferring to the University of Michigan was my ultimate goal after moving on from USAFA. I had put down a deposit and chosen my classes when I received an unexpected offer for the Falcon Foundation Scholarship in May. Even though it meant an extra year in school, it was a no-brainer for me because USAFA had been my #1 choice for years- it was my dream school. Ultimately, it wasn't about the free education, the opportunities, or anything like that for me- it was an emotional decision. I felt that I belonged here. This is my experience, but like I mentioned, everyone is different. Hope this helps.

A question about parents weekend: if your parents can't make it, are you allowed to leave anyway, as in stay in town? Or must you remain on campus? Thank you!

Sorry we missed this before! Yes, you are allowed to leave. You still need to stay within the 150 mile radius and attend the football game on Saturday, but you are free to leave and enjoy yourself just like everyone else.

Thank you! I appreciate the answer! :tomcat:
