I would love any specific recommendations from current students or parents regarding the following (do we need to purchase, how many, any SPECIFIC ones preferred, etc.):

-Sneakers (I’ve heard white or mostly white/very light grey, blue trim if there has to be trim)
-Boots
-Watch
-Eyeglasses (I’ve heard two pairs)
-High school graduation gifts (so many family members have asked what they can get him), meaningful and/or practical ideas welcome

Thank you!!

1) Gifts? Cash, your Mid will get an opportunity to open an Navy Federal Credit Union account on campus. Plebes don't have many privileges.
2) Sneakers? Two pair - white/blue/gray - no crazy colors.
3) Boots will be issued
4) Watch - definitely - black G-shock is a good one
5) Eye Glasses - two pair definitely plus an 'idiot strap' which helps keep you from dropping your glasses.

Get a large White beach towel to send with them for the bedding.

Thank you!! I’d heard somewhere that the issued boots weren’t good but it might have been on a thread for another academy. The g-shock watch has been mentioned a few times so I think we’ll go with that, thanks. No one wants to give him cash but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind receiving it! I can at least give four ideas now: sneakers, extra pair of sneakers, watch, extra pair of glasses. And I guess eyeglass strap and white towel too, although we’ve been told after indoc on the towel. Thanks again.

The towel is because once you make your bed, you probably will never sleep under the covers as it takes too long to remake in the morning. Plebes typically put a sheet on top of the bed and then use a large towel as a blanket until the get more privileges.

The g-shock watches come in quite a range of functions and price! Are any features very important to have (atomic time, gps, etc.)? Digital and analog or if it only has one display, which of those is best?

Trying to figure out if any of the $100-$200 ones are good enough 😂. Thank you!

For watches the cheapest timex you can buy. especially on the ship its too easy to knock it against a pipe or steel bulkhead and smash the glass. Used to have a chief mate that wore a tag heuer, but that's mostly an admin position.

My DS and DD both went with a cheap ($40) watch. Some may disagree, but we saved the expensive watches for USMMA graduation presents.
Ok I’ll just have him pick out what he likes, in black and not too expensive, but are there any features it should have besides obviously telling time?

Just the time is what is important for now. Many young people do not wear a watch and rely on their phones to tell time. Since plebes will likely have restricted (or no) access to their phones for awhile, an accurate watch is important. Some mids like an alarm feature to insure timely wake up. Water resistant feature would be good if your Plebe plans to take part in waterfront sports after INDOC.

Be careful in terms of SMART watches. I know an apple watch was not allowed for academic integrity issues.

Thank you, very helpful!

We bought my son this one for his birthday in 2019. He wears it daily and has been very happy with it.

My son has destroyed 2 cheap G-shocks over the past 4 years. The last one I bought has the metal wrist band, water resistant, atomic, and is solar powered. It was great when he was on board ship because it automatically changed time zones.

That won't always work out if the ship isn't keeping the zone description that corresponds to its geographic longitudinal.. and that happens more often than you would think..

I got to the point where I didn't wear a watch while at sea. Onboard, there are clocks in nearly every space, and while ashore, well, just plan your time. . . .and time changes, as you state, do not generally follow their geographical position. And if standing watch, are broken up. Don't worry. . .someone will bang on your cabin door. . .
