Hi

I’m a 13 year old boy from Maine. It has been my dream to go to the Naval Academy and later fly planes forever. However, I have Astigmatism. My cyl is -0.75 and I think my diopter is 5.50. Can I still join the military with Astigmatism? Any reply’s are appreciated.

The cylinder is your astigmatism. You don’t have much astigmatism if your cylinder is -0.75.

You are a high myope though if your sphere is -5.50. You’re at risk for retinal detachment.

You’re within standard for refractive error (ie not worse than -8.00).

If you’ve mixed up the numbers on your eye glasses prescription and the -5.50 is actually your cylinder, then your astigmatism doesn’t meet the standard (ie cylinder can’t be worse than -3.00).

You’re young and you’re probably hitting the books hard which suggests to me that your refraction will worsen as you get closer to 17-18 years old when you have to get a DODMERB exam.

You won’t be able to fly for the USN with a sphere (or cylinder) of -5.50 though. You can do other stuff for the USN (you meet refraction standards and assuming you meet the visual acuity standards too) but just not fly.

I have contacts and I’m reading off the case to get my prescription. Perhaps I could send you a picture of that case to make sure I’m not mixing the numbers up.

This is what it looks like on my case:

D Cyl
+5.50 -.75

The D is over the +5.50 and the Cyl is over the -.75

Take a pic and post.

Make sure your name isn’t in the pic

I have 20/20 vision corrected. I don’t know if this would help but just throwing something out there

Ok so you don’t have myopia. You have hyperopia (farsightedness) with spheres of +5.50.

You meet the standards for accession but you don’t meet the standards for Naval Aviation. Your sphere can’t be worse than +3.00 which it is.

As for astigmatism, you can’t be worse than -1.00 for aviation so your close to it already.

The good part is your refraction (sphere and cylinder) meet USNA standards so if you get in, then you can eventually get PRK or LASIK while at the Academy to get yourself to aviation standards.

Your cylinder (-0.75) can worsen between now and when you get your DODMERB exam though

Am I close to the astigmatism retirements for the Naval Academy or do you think my astigmatism will get worse. Also, do regular nrotc schools give free lasik surgery?

You can't get free LASIK or PRK while doing NROTC. You can get it for free only while attending the SAs.

I didn't memorize the MANMED, but I am almost sure the standard for accession into the USNA is cylinder of +/- 3.00. With your current cylinder of -0.75, you're well within standard. I don't think your astigmatism will get worse than the standard of -3.00 within the next 4 years. As mentioned before, the standard for cylinder to get into naval aviation is +/- 1.00 so you're close there.

What are the requirements for navy seal?

How can you tell that I have hyperopia? I’m pretty sure I am near cited.

Key word is "eventually" .. You should not go out and get Lasik , PRK etc. before admission to Service Academy. I am not certain (and generally avoid these types of issues because BGO's aren't supposed to be involved with DODMERB/Medical issues), but it is my recollection that getting eye surgery before admission is disqualifying

That’s correct. “Eventually” is the key word. Getting corneal refractive surgery (CRS) prior to admission to a SA is DQ.

Those who get in and need CRS can eventually get them at a SA, typically during the 3rd year.

You’re telling me you’re a +5.50 sphere. The + tells me hyperopia or farsightedness.

If you were -5.50, then the - (or “minus”) tells me you have myopia.

I believe he's a doc and very educated on all things USNA based on what I've read...knows his stuff!
