ASVAB as junior in HS?

My son wants to do ROTC in college. His high school is offering the ASVAB next week and the guidance counselor is marketing it as a way to find your aptitude for a career in or out of the military.

My son wants to take the test, but he has not prepared for it. I’m assuming the military keeps a record of the scores. Will his performance affect his chances of getting an ROTC scholarship? Will it affect his choices even after he completes ROTC and takes it again?

Thank you!!

I am a high school senior and took it last year. The Service Academies and ROTC don't look at ASVAB just SAT/ACT for standardized tests. I took it and nobody from ROTC or a SA has said anything about it. I just get phone calls from recruiters for enlisting/national guard/reserves every few months.

Also I'm pretty sure the ASVAB only lasts for a few years and then you have to take it again so it will probably expire by the time they graduate ROTC.

The ASVAB will have no impact in the ROTC scholarship applicant evaluation. There will be no need to take the ASVAB after completing ROTC. The ASVAB is a tool used to identify aptitudes for enlisted job placement. ROTC is an officer training program during college. Sounds like there was a recent recruiter visit at your son's school. To take the ASVAB as a junior is premature and unnecessary for the goal identified. This is the time to focus on standardized testing, HS academics, physical fitness, and EC leadership development. These all will have a direct impact on a ROTC application.

I agree with above but also emphasize it's useful for determining a possible career aptitude. The test really doesn't have anything to do with the military per se. It might be useful to do it anyway regardless of any future college plans. It might help determine a college major.
