hey everyone,

im taking the ASVAB on thurs for the air force. anyone got good advice about it for me? ive been studying for the past 2 months.

Are you taking it as part of an officer accession program for the USAF? I thought they used the AFQT for their commissioning qualification?

The asvab is not only used for those interested in joining the military. It is one of the most elaborate and most commonly used aptitude tests used. Probably world wide. It measures your strengths and weaknesses. It's used for civilian and military jobs. For college, occupations, and the military. A sub-section of the asvab is the AFQT. This is the section that determines if you are qualified for military service. And each branch of the military has different minimum score requirements on the AFQT section. There's even different versions of the asvab. Military.com explains it pretty well. http://www.military.com/ASVAB/0,,ASVAB_Explained1.html

Service Branch Required AFQT Score*
Army 31
Navy 35
Marines 31
Air Force 36
Coast Guard 45

If you've been taking the practice ASVAB for 2 months- you are about as ready as any person under the sun. Unless you have severe test taking trauma- you will be fine. Aren't you graduating next summer from Mass Maritime? You've been on cruise- you must have had a fair amount of math and mechanical exposure, I would think that you are going to be pretty well prepared to blow away the ASVAB. I don't think you need to stress out over this too much.

its the math im worried about no my strongest subject. and the fact only 4 parts count for ur score makes it harder.

Math Shouldn't be a problem for you. ASVAB should be a no brainer. After all your many Sea Terms you should ace it. This year on the Kennedy is liberty at Puerto Rico, Barbados and Vera Cruz. Wish I was going.

So the OP is enlisting in the Air Force after completing a 4-year degree at one of the Maritime schools?

To each their own, I guess.

Best of luck to the OP. As others have said, I'm sure your college coursework should prepare you for the ASVAB. :thumb:

They do, you're correct.

ASVAB isn't required for officers, only the AFOQT.

I didn't find it too hard. I scored an 88 and gave it no prior studying. With a bit of studying I could have probably got 94+. Don't worry about the math section, if you have a solid grounding in Algebra/Geometry...you're good to go.

It can be very different for different people however. I took it for kicks my sophomore year, no studying, and got a 97. I've had friends that study for months and only get in the 50s.
