Athletic ability effect on nomination / admissions decisions

Luigi, can a school play D1 baseball, soccer, volleyball, hockey, etc and then D3 football? I have no idea; but am thinking it has to be the same across the board. USMA is very competitive currently in every other sport at the D1 level. Why would they move to D3? Give the new coach a few years to rebuild and recruit....who knows? Stranger things have happened. :thumb:

It has nothing to do with performance on the field. That's is not my point whatsoever.

It has everything to do with D1 recruiting and possible appointment "provisions" that are made to accommodate D1 athletes, in order to entice them or qualify them to enter USMA/USNA/USAFA.

81 members of the football roster attended USMAPS, 55%.

I guess female statistics aren't really accurate since there are already so few of them in general. Also the fact that generally females do better in academics. (not trying to start another debate here so if you disagree with that please just disregard what I said)

55% doesn't surprise me for football but it won't be that high for other men's sports. This doesn't mean they are a bunch of unqualified idiots.

Luigi - back to your D1-D3 argument.

You know this how?????
Actually, the academies stand to "lose" by recruiting D1 athletes. They can quit their sport anytime after R-Day and they won't lose their "scholarship". While there may be some appointment *provisions* when you look at the number of ALL of the D1 athletes - that number is very tiny.
Playing D1 football brings competition, recognition and financial support to all of the other 23 D1 sports at West Point. Athletic budgets essentially stand on their own. They are self supporting and competing at the D1 level brings in the greatest number of support dollars.

Look at the D3 football schools - do you really thing that the West Point alumni and friends would be stand for D3 football? Michie stadium holds 35,000 people. Navy sells out their games at home and needs to play Notre Dame in Baltimore.
D3 schools typicall draw less the 5,000 to a game.
Do you really thing USMA should play Montclair State (9-0) in their 6,000 seat stadium?
Will Navy give up playing Notre Dame and play Frostburg State instead?
Will AF quit playing BYU and settle for UW-Whitewater?
