Hello,

My mother was wondering whether or not she should wear relatively formal clothing. Is it preference, or do most of the parents generally wear nicer clothing.

Also, my father will be wearing his uniform. Do most people wear their uniform their entire day, or change into it when the personal swearing in occurs?

Tell your mom to think long, hot, humid day. Most women will be in sundresses or shorts. There is nothing that she should dress or be formal for tomorrow. For your father, it's a mix, some wear it all day, others change into them as it gets closer to time for the swearing in ceremony. It also kinda depends on rank also, he could spend all day returning salutes.

Casual summer attire, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses. No formality, not even dressy informality. Men are in polos/open-neck ss shirts and shorts, women in summer pants, shorts, capris, skirts, summer tops. I would personally recommend not wearing the uniform until later for the oath-taking, especially if there’s a chance to run through the rain locker (take a shower) at wherever you are staying and head back to Stadium, park and take shuttle. The uniform will be wilted at day’s end. Parents will be loaded down with Mid Store bags, bags of parents’ tent swag, and it will be hot, humid and sticky, with precious few places to sit down in AC, with plenty of walking.

Since Dad’s in uniform, I assume he has an ID card that will let him park on the Yard. In that case, throw a hotel towel in the car, run into the Club restroom to freshen and change.

I’ll be there [emoji6] - sometimes people see my name tag and a certain look appears in their eyes!

Do you think that we will have to show up earlier in order to park on the yard? My report time is 0800. If we take the shuttle, should he just wear the uniform the whole day?

Let’s just say I roll onto the Yard to find a parking place when it’s still darkish, because that’s what staff and faculty do on I-Day, and most spaces get snapped up. That makes no sense for you with a report-in time of 0800. There are all kinds of ways to work the logistics. A lot depends on where you are staying. Some drop plebe and family in the vicinity of Alumni (NOT right in front of the doors, and the driver with ID drives around the Yard looking for a place, or goes back to the Stadium to dump car and take shuttle. Meanwhile, the plebe and family loiters a safe distance from Alumni Hall doors. If he can get the car on the Yard, it makes a convenient staging place for stuff.

Your Dad is an experienced uniform-wearer. He will figure it out. I just wanted him to know there is no expectation for him to sweat all day in it, that people go and come, and that he has options.

I would be surprised if you find parking anytime after about 6:30 on I Day. You can always pay and park out in town in one of the garages too.

When I worked IDay 2 years ago I had to be there at 5 am and hospital point parking was hard to come by and that’s often last resort. Things may be slightly better now with the parking garage (assuming it’s now open).

If not familiar with the weather in Annapolis in the summertime, good to plan for it to be VERY hot and humid. Lightweight casual clothing along with sunscreen/hats/water.....etc. No one will be taking notes on what your parents are wearing. Parent related activities are largely outdoors and require a good bit of walking. PTR package usually discusses parking options. What may have been true in a prior year might not be valid now. Best to assume you need to park offsite at either the stadium or various pay to park garages.
