I have heard that the standard issue boots are not very comfortable, and that there better ones that might make a nice Christmas gift. But there seems to be some disagreement about what is currently authorized by new Dant, and this seems to indicate that only the USNA issue ones are allowed. Sorry if ignorant plebe mom question. (I'd ask my plebe, but that kinda spoils the present. LOL) 1575599073122.png1575599073122.png1575599073122.png

There is nothing wrong with the issued boots. As long as you break them in correctly, they're wonderful.
The type 3 uniform is the most comfortable uniform to wear, so obviously it won't be authorized very often. ;)

When it comes to uniform items, let your Plebe or mid be the guide. He’s going to have to manage that stuff for about the next 9 years or so, and he will learn all the pro tips along the way about breaking in boots, best boot socks to wear, best insoles to buy, etc. I do think buying him his first officer uniform cover as a graduation gift is a classic, down the road.

Rugged luggage is always a good choice.

Or, with A-N coming up, take advantage of Lands’ End 50% off holiday promotion and send him a set of Thermaskins!

I'm a Firstie, Class of 2020. As of right now no other boots are authorized with NWUs other than black steel toed boots. Multiple proposals were sent up the chain by various members of the Brigade to change it, but to no avail.

The only exception to this rule are the USMC Selects from the Class of 2020. As blueberries are no longer authorized for '20, USMC selects are required to wear the MARPAT Woodland utility uniform with the appropriate USMC combat boots on both Warrior Wednesdays (Firsties wear their service assignment uniform) and Tactical Thursdays (Normally, all classes wear NWUs that day).

Hope this helps.

For NWU, technically boots are supposed to be steel toe. However the Dant has said this is only for the sake of uniformity because the issued combat boots look slightly different because they have drainage holes along the sides. As long as the boots look like the steel-toes they are fine.

I love Boots - Navy/CG source Bates I believe ( Durashock — Wolverine). They are full grain leather and polishable. The USMC MEBs are Nubeck leather, and don’t take polish, just water proof spray. We have Farm, so I am always in boots doing something. My MEBs (in the picture above) are just for special occasions, when I have an important business meeting, or a church dinner.

Gore-Tex (or similar material) waterproofed boots would not have the “Air-Breather” circulation holes on inner arch just above the sole stictching.

The Danner MEBs in the picture above are a Hot Weather version, no Gore Tex, and include the air breather holes. They also come in All Weather GoreTex waterproof, without the breather holes.

The USMC RATs are nearly identical to the MEBs, but come with an outer plastic toe guard, a Steel or no Steel inner, and Temperate (Holes) or All-Weather Gore Tex.

Btw - I don’t think the Marines source the RATs anymore ... Only the MEBs I believe.
