Auto insurance for kids at service academies.

Both when was a Midshipman and when my son was a mid, we did this way:
.
Prior to "Career Starter Loan" which was 2/C year, had a family owned car near the academy and the
family owned car stayed on the family's insurance.
Once Career Starter Loan came in, purchased own car and insured on own (USAA) insurance.

I know this is a super old thread, but just in case anyone is reading it now...

I work in the legal dept of a major insurance company (not going to name names but we're good neighbors;)). Please just call your agent with these questions. They will help you best assess the situation and save as much money as they can. They want you insured and they want you covered but they also want you happy and will try to work the best deal that covers your butt and your wallet. Always best to call them first because the defense of "but someone on the internet said so!" does not hold up in court.

Plus, laws are different in different states. Good advice.
