So my kid has an appointment but I’ve read about people still putting down deposits to plan B in case child get hurts prior to I-day. Is that really something people do? Do you put housing deposits down or something else? Child certainly not going to look for a roommate. Thx.

We put down a deposit in case something happened before I-day AND got a gap year, in case something happened during doolie year. No housing deposit. My son contacted the school and was very up front about his intentions. The school was very supportive.

We did. Both sons (that attended SA). Their contract for housing states that ‘only enrolled students can reside there’, so if they didn’t attend, the contract is void. No fees. Obviously you wild want to be clear on this point.

It’s up to you, a personal choice, and probably also depends on how competitive your plan B actually is. But yes…to your question….people really do it. It’s not uncommon.

It’s fine to have a deposit on a backup school as long as the school is OK with it. In my son’s case, he contacted three of his alternate choices where he had acceptances and explained that he had a USAFA appointment but would like to keep a spot as backup. Two of them said no (Rice and Northwestern), while the third (MSOE) was fine with it. We paid the housing deposit of $200 and everything was fine. After BCT he emailed MSOE to let them know he was not coming.

My daughter was accepted to Tufts Univ and deposited $500 as a backup. After she completed BCT, she emailed to school to let them know she was not coming.

Most schools will work with you if you contact them and are transparent (there are some unfortunate exceptions). In most cases, you will just lose your enrollment deposit. The key here is to communicate with the backup school and make sure they are OK with being the backup school.

Did she explain the situation to them or just paid the money?

Two schools (Gettysburg and Macalester) who accepted DD indicated that her acceptance was good for two years when they learned she had an appointment to a SA. No deposit required. The others never replied.

If you got an appointment, I would save your time and money on backup options. Cortes scuttled his ships so there was no turning back!

It's always good to have a backup plan. That said, many basics got hurt for various reasons during BCT. Some missed 8-10 days of BCT and still got the exception. Some quit due to personal reasons. My advice is to check with your DS/DD and make sure he/she knows what he/she is getting into. Many dreams of attending SA, only to realize it's not for them.
