Hi,

Would anyone care to help with an answer? What kind of backpack (books and laptop) will the new cadets be allowed to use after they finish BCT? Will they be given one? Will they have to purchase one from the USAF bookstore or should they bring one with them and use that after BCT ends? I see in the Academy pictures of students more than type of backpacks, but I am not sure what rules (size and colors) apply to new cadets.

Thanks a lot, especially now, that there only a few days left until in-processing!

Our class was issued two backpacks: a dark blue one with our last name embroidered on it and a black one that came with the purchase of our computers. I think most of my class preferred the black one because it was a little sturdier and doesn't cut into your hands as badly when carrying it.

However, you're allowed to have your own backpack after BCT as long as it's black or dark blue. I don't have the CSP with me and can't remember off hand if there are any other restrictions.

For me, the black issued backpack was pretty bulky so I just used the lighter blue one and only brought a notebook or two and my laptop. It was a little bit more uncomfortable to carry in your left hand but it was lighter and I know some kids who covered the handle in duct tape or wrapped a black sock around it so it would not be less uncomfortable.

After recognition I started using my north face backpack that I used all throughout high school and was plain black. It was actually the backpack that I brought to I-Day.

It is also squadron dependent. My squadron did not allow "personal backpacks" and we had to use the issued black or blue one. I think my squad was the rare exception though...

Either way, backpacks should be pretty low on your priority list of things to worry about during you last couple weeks of freedom. Get to USAFA, get settled into the academic year and if you'd still like one of the non-issued backpacks, you'll know what works. Personally, I started using a different one after Recognition.
