145 Years ago today in 1876, the 7th Cavalry under LTC (MG Brev) George A Custer was virtually eliminated as a fighting force at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. 5 Companies were completely destroyed and out of 700 troopers deployed a total of 268 KIA and 55 WIA including of course with Custer and his 2 brothers, nephew and brother-in-law.
Lessons learned: don't underestimate the enemy's capabilities or overestimate your own, don't assume the enemy will do what you want him to do, and for heavens sake don't split your forces in the face of the enemy!
If you are interested Nathaniel Philbrick last year wrote a very interesting account of the Battle: "The Last Stand: Custer, Sitting Bull, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn"
