Hey gents, recently I decided I wanted to change my grades around, and do something with my life. I had bad grades freshman year, bad grades Firsf half of softmore year, and decent grades last half of years. If I was very good at my sport that is waterpolo, and showed significant improvement(AP classes?) what are my chances of getting in to the Academy Or NAPS? What can I improve? BTW I’m considering starting and leading a club(ideas welcome) if that helps.

Apologies for the bad formatting, all help and advice is welcome.

There's more to it than just grades. I was similar to you and my unweighted GPA is only like a 3.3. I'm doing enough extracurriculars that will hopefully make up for it.

You will need to knock it out of the park the rest of this year and next and, even then, it will be an uphill climb. That said, there is always a chance and, if you can show that you've got your act together, it may work out for you.

Also, regardless of what happens with USNA, it's a good thing for you personally to focus on school so that you have as many opportunities as possible upon graduation. So keep doing it!

Hey tec... getting real here. You are a long shot. Big time. You need to raise your grades, but more importantly, you need to learn.

I'll start with the elephant in the post... It's not softmore. Start by learning that.

I don't mean to be harsh, but you'll be competing for an appointment against some wildly successful applicants. If you can't spell sophomore I doubt you'll get serious consideration.

What can I improve?

First, start with an honest assessment of where you are now, and how to improve your chances. In my experience, one doesn't just wake up one day and improve their grades. What are you going to do different to get better grades. Keep in mind, "decent" grades isn't going to cut it.... you need to get great grades, strong ACT/SAT's, and then be prepared to present a compelling case to Admissions that you know you had a slow start but turned it around , set a goal and accomplished it.

It's not just grades and SAT's -- you need a strong record of leadership, activities and athletics to be competitive. Find something you are interested in, and strive for excellence,

Finally, why do you want to attend USNA --if your goal is to serve as a Navy /Marine Corps officer, there are other paths to a commission, and I would suspect that with some, like OCS, your high school record is of little relevance. If you turn your academic performance around, attend college and apply to OCS, you will end up in the same place (0-1) as if you are a USNA graduate.

You are starting behind the power curve , while many USNA candidates have been preparing themselves for years. That being said, if you don't try, your chances are zero. It's great that you have identified your goal, now is the time to come up with a plan for achieving the goal and then executing it.

Tec....do you have a true, deep call to serve your country? Not sure why you suddenly think a Service Academy is for you.
