I just finished up my first semester at a T30 school and was hoping to reapply to USNA. However, I bombed English ~ Does this completely jeopardize my chance of admission? I had a 4.0 in HS and a 32 ACT as well as a 4 year varsity athlete and a hand full of other EC's. My grades are below for the fall semester. (FYI not trying to do a "chance me", just want to know if this was a fatal mistake).

CHEM=A or A- (Awaiting final grade), ECON= A, History= A-, English= B-

No, it wasn’t.

Reapply with a reasonable explanation for your B- if possible.

Get a better grade in a humanities course next semester.

That is all.

Admissions looks at a Reapplicant's performance as a Freshman to evaluate whether you can handle college level academics. do you mean by "bombed" C ? F ? Did you take a STEM course load, including Calculus ? Chemistry ? How did you do in those classes? Are you a reapplicant this year, or reapplying next ? (If this year, unfortunately advice about doing better next semester is not relevant --Admissions looks at first semester grades.

"Bombing" English certainly doesn't help, but isn't necessarily fatal. IF you have strong background, and good performance in your STEM classes, you are probably still competitive. However, I would encourage you to address the issue head on, discuss with your BGO and be up front with why you think you bombed English.. Also, its probably late now, but you should discuss with your English teacher, as they will be asked to "evaluate " (not really a "letter of recommendation" ) you. What they say about your effort and aptitude will be important.

Finally, and most important -- 100% of those that don't apply , don't get in. Yes, a "bomb" in English could hurt you, but you will never know if you don't apply. Good Luck.

All subjects are derived from Math and Language/Literature .... Your favorite subjects should be Math and English ... if your native tongue is English.

One thing my daughter always complained about is that she never had enough books to read when she was at NAPS. She’s like me ... read good books cover to cover in a sitting, then critique it.

I took this course titled 'Human Sexuality' my Soph. Yr. at the UW........... it was mostly movies :). I am struggling to reconcile the course content of the class with your statement.

No, the English B- isn't necessarily a bomb.

However, without more information, we can only go off your short list of courses. And it's short at only 13 hours, no college calculus, and falls short of a plebe like and any SA like schedule. Are these Honors sections? Were you placed in 200/300 level due to APs? Are you at college, or at home? Maybe you had more classes but didn't list them? Work full time? Significant part time or club/volunteer/sport? What else are you doing, ie how do you think you answer the question of whole person concept/ WCS, given only 4 classes listed?

Total credit load was 17 (4 for each class 5 for chem) + a 6 credit course at local CC

In my undergrad freshman English class Ernest Hemingway would have received a B- (at best.) The writing was all subjectively graded by a total witch. Just hang in there and keep working hard!

Also keep in mind that you’re still required to send standardized test scores. Though perhaps not as important as your college transcript, they’re still going to be considered. In my view a great score on the English section of the ACT or SAT demonstrates verbal aptitude better than essay grades, which can be quite subjective. Until you score a 36 on both Math and English, there is room for improvement!

It's not fatal. In an essay you could talk about the B- and what you intend to do to get a higher mark next semester.
