Does anyone have any more details about band co? For example, how do people get selected into band co? Are you required to already know an instrument? Do you get to choose an instrument? How does being in band co vary from being in other companies? Pros and cons? Is band co difficult to be in? Thanks!

There is a difference between being in the band and being in band company. Not everyone in band co. is necessarily in the band as some of the slots are used to keep the companies relatively the same size.

I'll leave it at that.

I also have questions about band. Does the school supply instruments? If not, do they have a specific brand of instrument they prefer? Do students need to audition for band? If so, when?

Hehehe, Band Company can have its own reputation. . . Years ago, my Principal Surveyor when I was working for ABS was from the Class of 1970. . . . I made a smarmy comment about Band Co. . . . and found out that he was in it. . . . good thing he was also a pretty good friend, too. . . . and don't worry. . . it's just one of those KP things. . . .

I am currently in Band Co. with the Class of 2019.

1.) Does the school supply instruments? Yes they do. Though the amount of instruments vary depending on what you play. I highly recommend bringing your personal instrument if you have one. I play saxophone and brought mine with me to indoc. The current instruments the school has are not the best of quality, on par with those of say high school issued instruments.

2.) Specific Brand of instrument? No, not really. If it can make a decent sound you're good.

3.) No auditions required. Once you're in Band Co. as a plebe you'll be playing something no matter what.

Hope this answers your questions!

I'm currently a plebe (soon to be recognized Mid!) in Band Co.

1.) Selection and Playing an Instrument: Band Co. selects people who put down somewhere in their application they were involved in band at some time in your high school career. So if you put "I played trumpet freshman year of high school" Welcome to Band Co. We do have a good number of plebes in Band Co. that have never touched an instrument a day in their lives. For those people, they play what's called the timpani drums and literally twirl sticks or they're part of the infamous symbol squad and clap their hands together. Everyone is assigned something even if you have no musical talent.

2.) Differences between Band and The Others: We are different. You'll hear a lot of different things depending on who you talk to. Some people in Band hate it so much they transferred to a different company within the first month. Others appreciate Band. I personally enjoy my time in Band Co. and wouldn't want to be in any other company. Again, not all of us (plebes and midshipmen) feel the same way. There are perks, however. We've won both Best Cleaning Stations and Best Rooms for the past two Command Inspections. Our dorms are always clean and cleaning is a major focus in the Band barracks. Whenever we've had special guests visit campus, administration picks Rogers Hall for them to tour as we have the nicest barracks to show off. So that's a big perk, I personally enjoy living in a nice clean environment. There are many other differences but the best way to know is to visit Band and get a feel for it.

This is because the command inspections are basically run by members of band company, no coincidence there.

Not true, when the Commander of USTRANSCOM Gen. Darren McDew (oversees MSC) visited, he was taken to Cleveland, the newest barracks at the school.

Yes, because the rest of us don't care enough to buff floors to mirror finishes.

1.) Band Co. puts in the most effort for cleaning. That's why we win. Simple as that.

2.) There's a picture of the General shaking hands with Band Co. CC and BC2 (who is also Band Co.) on Main Deck of Rogers. He toured us too.

3.) There's a difference right there. Band Co. actually cares.

Wait. So if I was in band my freshman year, I'm most likely going to end up in Band Co and will have to play???

There was a portion to indicate interest for Band Co on the application, if you said 'yes' they will place you in Band Co, because there is definitely an uneven distribution of plebes in Band Co. I don't know if that's by design. I do know a kid that was put in Band Company and managed to switch companies after a while.
