Do the cadets have to open an account with Navy Federal? What about USAA Bank? Any other viable options?

No. They don't have to use Navy Federal. It is convenient since there is a branch on campus but it is not a requirement.

And looking beyond CGA, Navy Federal is near many CG stations.

My son is a cadet and has only a usaa account and he gets along fine. Usaa is fantastic.

I had Navy Federal as a cadet (as well as Suntrust from home). Eventually I got my car loan from USAA so I had USAA too. I ditched Navy Federal because, at the time, they didn't recognize the Coast Guard as a branch of the military (although they did serve DOD civilians.... which is.... well.... interesting). I withdrew my money, closed my accounts and said good bye.

I haven't looked back. I eventually ditched Suntrust too.

Of course, since then Navy Federal has included the Coast Guard. I've been happy with USAA. Nothing wrong with Navy Federal, and they are located on campus, which helps.

USAA has the added benefit of having car insurance, personal property insurance, etc right there too. Easier to manage all your accounts in my opinion.
