Barney web cam

I also had trouble viewing the webcams with internet explorer but they work fine with Mozilla Firefox- except when too many people are viewing.

Barney square Web cam

the USMMA web page says that the site is "under construction". The web cam stopped working for me on Monday.

I h've had the same problem since Saturday Morning...both the Barney Square and Waterfront Webcams.....

Thank you

Thank you all for the prompt replies. I had just updated some drivers before we went to parents weekend so I was sure if it was a conflict on my end. I will just need to sit tight.

I need a fix...

OK, I need a fix. Missing the noon muster is making me fussy.:bang: Barney Square and Waterfront web cams are still down. Does anyone on campus (DoIT?) have a line on an ETA for getting them back online?

Not good news.....

This is outside my jurisdiction, but I can tell you not to expect them back. I would contact the parents coordinator or DoIT for an official explanation.

Here's what I got when I asked....

The Academy is in the early stages of redesigning its general web site. In the interim, the web cameras have been removed for annual maintenance and some long deferred (but very necessary) network maintenance.

Since we now have a new Superintendent, we want to afford Admiral Greene the opportunity to express his preferences in the design, structure, and operation of the Academy web site. Unfortunately, there are no small number of similar opportunities across the Academy. So it is likely we will remain in our current status for the immediate future.

Gone but not forgotten...

Thanks for the quick response and updated info. I will keep checking while the withdrawals subside...

Hey, it was nice while it lasted.:thumb:

I can't seem to edit my post above, but please do not contact DoIT.

I sent Shirley Anthony an email and have yet to get a response. Sent it when the cams went out.

Sorry but that answer doesn't pass the smell test to me - i.e. sounds like total bureaucratic BS - those web cams are IP addressable cameras and in order for them to be of any use to anyone they have to be enabled and on the network. I've never known why the Barney Square cam was where it is other than for PR but the Waterfront cam is perched so it can look out over as much of the waterfront as any single fixed camera can and I'd expect that it is used to provide a remote view of the boats, etc. to the sailing master and others when they feel the need to look out over the scene remotely.

So why anyone would totally remove the cameras, especially the waterfront one from the network so he and the waterfront folks like the RWO can do that for any extended period is beyond me. So if the basic network is up then the camera can be tied in to it.

Of course if for any reason they wanted to inhibit public access to the camera there are a multitude of ways to do that and I suspect that's what's been done. Why given the mundane views of these two cameras is beyond me. Of course I could be wrong, DoIT might just not want the hassle of keeping these feeds up for basically PR purposes since the minute you put some sort of feed like this up we (John Q Public) assumes that you will provide solid availability on a 24/7 basis.

So there may have been some sort of policy change but frankly I doubt it - probably just a case of DoIT and HW using the change in Superintendent to exercises his "power trip" and stop doing something he wanted to stop all along. It just seems typical of his lame a$$ behavior - but to be fair to him the less he and his staff have to do in the way of service level provision on any sort of basis the less the chance for his and their incompetence to be plainly visible. I guess if I had a new boss, especially one who knew and was used to seeing what high levels of professionalism and competence look like in the way of results are, I'd be careful and a little gun shy too....

I'll just throw this one out on the table just to chew on a little....SECURITY. After all it is the "United States Merchant Marine Academy". It was fun watching every so often but I don't think I would like a cam set up at my front door for whoever to just press a button and watch when I go to work or come home or when my daughter comes home from school and is alone. But security cameras set up for security only is a different story. As for me I'll miss it.

IT dept an HW

Megga dittos Japerdog. The ones at KP who are used to running things half a--- should be worried, Eventually things will change and heads will roll.

I've been around property management for about 25 years. USMMA looks like a property in distress, at least in the part of the country I'm from. I hope the new super can get DOT to step its game up. The rumors I've heard is that DOT wants USMMA to be "the gem of the service academies". They have a long way to go, but at least they are setting a goal. Does anyone know what DOT's plans are? I hear that are going to spend more money, but then on the other hand they run out of basics: soap in bathrooms, cut the money for Cookie Cafe, etc. You only have to walk around the campus for a couple of minutes to see the basic maintenance for the grounds has been cut way back.

Facelift

"The rumors I've heard is that DOT wants USMMA to be the gem of the service academies"

Thats what Lahood said last year.

It took 9 months to hire a Superintendent.

My best guess a couple more years before we see a facelift at KP.

The web cams were shut down due to security issues from what i have been told. I too will miss the peek at lunch muster etc.., butoh well.
