Basic Training in ROTC

The short and to the point answer to your question is no- there is no summer training that you will have to go to prior to enrolling at a civilian college ROTC program. If you are going into Army ROTC, the only mandatory summer training is the one month LDAC that you will go to between your Junior and Senior year. There are some other Army schools (AirBorne, Air Assault, Scuba, Mountain Warfare) that you can request to attend during your ROTC cadetship but they are all voluntary and attendance is based on availalble slots and selection by your ROTC detachment.

Armyman...I think I jumped the gun and got this thread a little spun up. Can't tell you all how many times a cadet asks me if they can go to Basic Training. There are many out there (recruiters, other cadets, friends in the guard or reserves) who tell them that basic training is what they need to do, and that they will be less of an officer if they don't go. Hence my overzealous response. Bruno is dead on regarding required and optional summer training for ROTC cadets.

There is a requirement for training before becoming a freshman in college IF you plan on attending a Military Junior College to get your commission through the Early Commissioning Program. www.nmmi.edu

AROTC and Basic Training

I am a member of the Virginia Tech Army ROTC program and I know that we can be sent to schools over summer break like Jump School, Air Assault, and a bunch of others. However, I have been told that the Army stopped giving all but like 2 slots to Freshmen Cadets for many reasons. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible for me to get them to send me to Infantry Basic (yes I know its for Enlisted) over the summer as a school? Thank you for your help.

Not unless you are planning on enlisting first

So plebe summer, swab summer, bct usafa, beast usma is worthless. So why is it part of the academies program?

I'm sure there are many reasons. One would be to work on physical fitness. You will be doing that in ROTC. Another would be to observe and get you used to operating under stress. Believe me, you'll do that in ROTC. One is to quickly educate you on the ways of the service. You will do that in ROTC. NROTC has a week long orientation where you'll get some of the basic/BEAST experience. I assume AROTC has a similar thing. It's no cake walk. Several kids in my son's unit dropped during orientation and everyone was pushed to the edge and had to decide if they really wanted to be there. If ROTC wasn't turning out effective officers the program would not exist.

Deaconhm - this will not happen, unfortunately, for many reasons. Primarily:

1) The 11x (infantry) pipeline is currently closed...i.e. no room at the Benning School for Boys. (although we know that can change at any time)

2) There is no such thing as "infantry basic". 11x go through Infantry OSUT, which is Basic/AIT combined, and lasts 14-16 weeks. You would likely not have time to complete this during summer break anyway.

3) The only way to attend Basic and AIT would be to enlist. If you're already a member of the Corps at VT, your best option is to stay put.

I understand your eagerness to get some "real life" training. You should understand that you will be training for the rest of your career. Use what is likely your last "free" summer to get a job, travel, take a summer school class, etc. Do things to personally prepare yourself for the future. The Army will make sure you are properly trained at the appropriate time.

**If you absolutely must relate your summer activities to ROTC, then the biggest bang for your buck will be focusing on PT. If you're not already consistently 300+, make that your goal and come back your sophomore year ready to go.
