So, I've been doing some college tours at local Universities and attending live webinars of schools mostly on the east coast.

On one of the tours, my mom who came along, asked whether there were male/female bathrooms. The tour guide respectfully responded that they are not, but you get used it after a few weeks. The tour guide was a sophomore at the University.

Since then, I've been asking that same question for each school (this one fact is very difficult to find on school websites) and 90% of the colleges which I have asked have said that they have transitioned to using gender neutral bathrooms all around campus including in the dorms. The rooms are separated by gender but the showers, bathrooms, and floors all have both guys and girls.

If I recall correctly, each floor at USNA has both guys and girls from the same company but are the bathrooms separated by gender?

*this isn't to spark a debate on the gender issue, rather just an inquiry since I was very surprised that so many schools have implemented these measures already*

The bathrooms or "heads" for the Navally inclined are gender separated. Showers are in each individual room, so they are technically separated as well. Every deck in Bancroft is co-ed, but the rooms are all single gender.

Not sure which east coast unis you've been touring, but my 3 go to a state uni with gender separated bathrooms. There is still normalcy out there - keep looking.

I could not believe it when my DS told me he was waiting for his roommates so they could strip the floor :) Never have I ever thought I would hear those words out of my son's mouth. Mom got a big old giggle out of that one!

My midsib goes to a college where freshmen dorms are suite style with genders separated. It was a wonderful set-up with a common living room that had 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. They offer am amazing scholarships also!! Send me a message if you want more information!

I took DW to NYC recently to an event she really wanted to go to. I'm not easily embarrassed however when I walked into the co-ed bathroom filled with women I turned several shades of red and immediately turned around and walked out quickly. A women who picked up on this came out and was very nice and tried to usher me back in. I waited until it emptied out before I went in.

How about a bathroom with rows of toilets and no dividers in the Army barracks?
The good ole days when a roll of toilet paper or a magazine could be passed down if you needed it. Now it’s isolationism in there…..an Army of one

I'm with ya ! My daughters both went to East Coast liberal arts schools and both had the Coed bathroom deals... Even with stalls, I never got used to using the head (proper Navyology !) with women present when we visited.

(Another observation -- the coed heads at Civilian Schools were simply gross on Weekend mornings. I've got a pretty solid "gross" threshold, but these dorms were right up there with visiting one of my friends kids off-campus apartment a few years ago !)

The bathrooms in the dorm I lived in in the late 70's were all co-ed. Not a new thing. Everyone used the stalls; we planted ivy in the floor urinals to discourage use.
