Softball - Bears Win Three to Capture NEWMAC Crown

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/25/11)--Tournament Most Outstanding Player junior Hayley Feindel continued her outstanding season by doing one thing she had never done before. The All-American threw three straight shutouts in one day to register her 100th career win as top-seeded Coast Guard, ranked fourth nationally, came out of the losers’ bracket for the second straight season to win the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball tournament.

The third shutout was Feindel’s 25th of the season tying the NCAA Division III single-season record. Feindel now has 52 career shutouts and a career record of 100-18. She is 34-2 on the season tying her own single-season record of 34 wins set in 2009.

Feindel earned NEWMAC Most Outstanding Player honors as she pitched 33 innings in the tournament and didn’t allow an earned run, walked just one batter and struck out 59. In the three games on Monday, she fired a pair of two-hitters and a one-hitter and struck out 34 batters with no walks. Feindel is now second all-time in NCAA Division III history with 1,151 strikeouts, just 14 behind the all-time leader Jennifer Martinez from St. Joseph’s of Long Island, who had 1,165 strikeouts from 2006-2008.

Feindel, who leads the nation in wins (34), shutouts (25) and strikeouts (402), did not allow a run in 33 innings in the tournament pushing her streak to 98 straight innings without allowing an earned run. She became just the second player in NCAA Division III history to record over 400 strikeouts in a season.
