DS's birthday is in Feb. His grandfather wants to get him an alarm clock. He said that he wants to give DS something to remind him of his grandfather every morning.

What is the best alarm clock based upon your or your DS/DD's experience?

I know that radio alarm clocks are not allowed during Beast/Plebe Summer/Swab Summer/BCT.

Thanks.

We couldn't have a watch or clock that first summer. Our cadre were nice enough to tell us when it was time to wake up or go to sleep.

Most use smart phones now. I know at USNA we were issued alarms but our detailers were kind enough to tuck us in and wake us up with trash can kids. Any current USNA folks know if they still issue alarms?

I haven't seen a sponsor mid use anything other than smartphone for alarm for several years now.

For DGPa, I recommend a small digital photo frame with fun family and dog pix for the start of academic year.

Seems obvious, a 'Grandfather' clock.

Anyone know where the "grandfather clock" reference comes from?
The alarm clock was going to be a gift from my DS's Grandfather. Hence the "Grandfather" clock reference.

But it looks like Pappy better think of a new gift. Looks like the Cadre has waking up DS covered.

OK, I'll bite, you made me curious, so here is what I found:

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the “grandfather” clock was invented in the mid-1600s but at the time was called a long case clock due to the tall case containing the needed long pendulum and weights for an 8-day clock.

A song by Henry Clay Work in 1876, called My Grandfather’s Clock (referring to a long case clock), told from a grandson's point of view, is about his grandfather's clock. The clock is purchased on the morning of his grandfather's birth and works perfectly for ninety years, requiring only that it be wound at the end of each week. Yet the clock seems to eerily know the good and bad events in the grandfather's life – it rings 24 chimes when the grandfather brings his bride into his house, and near his death it rings an eerie alarm, which the family recognizes to mean that the grandfather is near death and gathers by his bed. After the grandfather dies, the clock suddenly stops, and never works again.

The Oxford English Dictionary says that this song is responsible for the fact that a long case clock is also called a "grandfather clock".

Correct!

You sure that wasn't a Twilight Zone episode? :D

Best? Your roommate hissing "get the F up, the sink ain't gonna clean itself."

My great-aunt was a former Army nurse, WWII. When she visited when I was a kid, and I wasn't up and making my bed at a time she deemed respectable, she would drop an ice-cold wet washcloth on my face. Bet she cowed any Army sleepyheads.

I would guess a "Grandmother Clock" just has softer chimes?

Are they allowed smart phones during their first summer?
During BCT this past year, DD and classmates (depending on squadron) were allowed to keep their watches, definitely not their phones. However, the cadre warned them that if they heard an alarm go off, the watches would be taken away.
Plenty of "alarms" to wake them up during the summer training...cadre, train whistles/horns, reveille, etc.

Do they have any interest in aviation. How about a travel alarm clock like this? https://www.amazon.com/Trintec-Avia...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=DG6QC82HCGCEZ89ENH6P
