Best and worst first duty assignments?

Both questions are good ones and of some concern to current third year cadets at the SAs, SMCs and ROTC branches. I'm fairly certain though that it's not at the top of the list of most cadets, who know they will go wherever they're sent and deal with it ("Where are the condos?").
If only Private Benjamin were on this forum. That would be fun!
Unfortunately, the questions were overshadowed by the "What's the Best - What's the Worst" title of the thread, a phrase guaranteed to raise hackles when posed about any subject here.

Two more questions:
1) Why did LITS change his avatar?
2) What's a hackle?

(Kinnem, I had the best of both worlds - shanking and slicing at the driving range then perusing this thread)
What? You didn't challenge your putting skills? A severe reprimand is in order!!!:biggrin:

And the rest of us were giving it to the kid with both barrels. :guns6:

Far from it. Bullies such as you and others are the barnacle and scum that sailors scape of the hull because it causes up to 70% drag.
Thanks for being an example of who I don't want to be when I grow up.

Is it wrong that I read that in a pirate voice?

Uh, if you haven't figured it out, a simple "pardon my youthful exuberance" when you noticed that posters with a long history on this board become irritated with the approach of your postings would have gone a long way in diffusing the initial friction over your faux pas of asking ridiculously broad questions without a clear direction to take the discussion.

For example, if you are trying to use the question of where are the best and worst posts? I am evaluating whether I will be happier in the Coast Guard or Navy...

Your questioning came across as "Everyone tell me your glory and horror stories about the best and worst places you could ever be posted in any service. I am a perfect stranger with a morbid curiosity about travel and want to laugh at your stories that will have nothing to do with my future service choice."

So when you start ignoring the subtle hints that your questions are bothersome (or a different term used by LITS), you up the ante by throwing out defensive posts trying to name-drop with someone who knows that person better than you will ever know, do you wonder why the tone gets even more harsh?

It is obvious to everyone here that you are now resorting to further name calling, which isn't helping your cause any.

I think you misunderstand the definition of the word "bully". There is no attempt to intimidate here because we hold nothing to harm you with. Any harm coming to you is entirely self inflicted.

The things we point out here are only things that will help you understand the approach you should be taking going forward (if you want to be successful in learning). My posts here have been pointing out things here that you seem to be missing. OK, my last post was a commentary on how we all seem to be aggressive in our teaching approach, but it is not meant to harm.

I suspect we have lost you, but I also suspect that you couldn't be reached...

Thought you said you're "inactive reserve" ?
Must be tough to find anything else better to do?
Enjoy your early retirement and thank you for your service.
I guess some don't just fade away in the sunset -so why don't you be like a bee and........

If asking "bore ass" questions is what it takes to do due diligence and make an informed decision on what's ahead of me- then so be it.
It's been very educational and helpful to get some insight from people and for that I'm thankful.
Somedays you're the windshield , somedays you're the bug.

You need to find another place to play.

Preferably not in any of the branches of the military.

Goliedad,

I never get tired of the Stripes clips.

What if I told you that I don't like to brag and that my screenname doesn't reflect the year I want to graduate?
Because of the valuable time that helpful people take out of their day to help some one out like me, need to come clean and maybe put a stop on senseless comments that have taken this thread off tangent.
The reason why I'm visiting all these SAs is because I have BFEs from all SAs except one, and also ROTC full ride to several universities.
I am at the fork of the road but it's muti-pronged. I have until the end of the month to make my decision. May 1st looms.
If any young man/woman ever reads this thread and take something from it, let it be that the choice of where you go beyond HS or college may be one of the major life choice you make. Do your best to research and make sure that the choice you make is the perfect fit for yourself. Do not let anyone discourage or talk you down. There are no stupid questions! the source of the response may be. Don't fall for the shiny brochure, school rank, prestige or tradition. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to visit almost all of the top choices that I have been accepted to. It's much more difficult to choose when they're all excellent options. Once again, thank you for the valuable information that so many have willingly provided.

On a side note, random often unrelated questions to people who haven't been identified on a random website isn't the ONLY kind of research you should be doing. Doing some of the information collecting yourself, from the HUGE internet at your finger tips, or even your library, is the right step.

Thanks for the entertainment!

Fun to wake up to early morning entertainment! Just finished reading through this whole thread . My DS has 3 overnights this month at SA's as well as an SMC and I can only hope that he does not come accross as disrespectful as iceman! YIKES...
In regards to the being offended by so called foul language..... better get used to it ... I would be willing to bet that lots of profanities are flying around once you become a cadet. In my part of the country most kids are already used to it by high school .

"It comes out presumptuous and conceited to think that just because you got an appointment means that others should follow your lead. You're just one of many who have gotten in. You may have just weak competition in your district. Your stats compared to the mean of previous classes aren't that impressive. There are applicants that have much better stats who won't be getting in because there are only so many slots available. We get that you got an appointment but I'd rather look at the official USAFA stats than yours. It's a much more accurate and credible representation of what to strive for."

Wherefore by their prior posts ye shall know them

Since you seem to end up posting that in every thread, maybe an SA isn't the place for you. Sometimes the problem is the constant and not the variable.

God, why do we even entertain the musings of kids like this, who are so obviously behind the power curve that they're more likely to be separated in their first year than to graduate in four?

If this forum is any indication of Iceman's true nature, than I'd say the only thing we know for certain is that the SA admissions program is not an airtight process, as it seems to have let this example of a candidate into multiple academies (IF he is to be believed about his BFEs, which I think he's probably not).

Great research you're doing, Iceman. You definitely want to make a 4-year college and armed service career decision based upon where you MIGHT live for one tour. I don't know why we ever doubted your wisdom.

The best response I got for this was from a graduating cadet of USCGA. 75% GPA,20% military and 5% CFT. I don't know how accurate but this is apparently how they determine if a graduating cadet gets their top choice or not. A management major also stated that he received a pilot slot through competition -also, that the choice of one's major doesn't really matter when it comes to who gets to go to Pensacola for UPT and about only 10% of their class didn't get what they wished for and are unhappy.
My uncle was a Lt. via OCS in the USN and had just recently gotten out after 22 years of service. He never had gotten his top choice of assignment in his career but was able to travel all over the world. He received an order for a second tour of Gitmo and decided that it's time to bow out and be with his family because his daughters are also getting ready to go off to college.
My brother's a jarhead so his input is limited to the enlisted side.
I have asked him and many others about the military lifestyle. I haven't a clue that's why my questions may seem boring to others but I honestly thought that there may be a few that could chime in and help. By no means did I use any profanity or derogatory language to come across as disrespectful. I may have alluded to metaphors and attempts at humor but if it offended anyone, I apologize. It's all a giant jigsaw puzzle that I'm trying to put together. This forum has been a godsend and I've learned tons of useful knowledge from it.

Am I the only one that after 11 pages still have no clue what SA/ROTC scholarships or careers iceman wants?

Maybe I missed it in the feuding, but can you finally tell us, or tell us again what your career desires are?

If you won't than I think it is time for the mods to lock the thread.

If you don't than in AF flying terms, it might be time to just shut up and color.

I am sure 2018 will get use to profanity. I am also sure you would not appreciate anyone that your DS/DD being spoke to in this manner by anyone in the process for getting an appointment. Finally I am sure you would be upset if your DS/DD was a minor. Young people can sometime be smart mouth and there are ways to deal with it without put downs, threats of shooting, and foul language. His question was simple and it was not necessary to respond with more question that he would not have a clue. 5 bases, favorite/not favorite, why is that so hard, or boring, or so out of the ordinary?
The reaction of the LOF posse is way out of line!
