Best COVID-19 MEME

I was a Capt. She was a CAPT. Big difference!

The Lawn of the Month award photo is priceless.
Good point. Corrected it.

Apologies, I was an Army SPC (SP4) and miss some finer details from other branches and recognize the leap between 0-3 and 0-6.

.. and +1 on Lawn of the Month award! You mowing with the tornado at your back means it might be yours this month!

It doesn’t help I chose not to use “CAPT,” the military abbreviation, because these days, it looks like shouting, and went with “Capt,” as many civilian style manuals use in publications. Some days I think I should have chosen more creatively, as many have here.

It doesn't take one long to be a member here to realize you are not one to pull rank on anybody regardless of capitalization.

On the other hand, I'm a one star so...

Captain...a fun rank for a young AF pilot taking his hot jet on a cross country to gain experience. And training was really valuable when you went to other services base, like a training weekend mission to Boca Chica Naval Air Station, Key West, Florida.

"Phone" (pre-internet) conversation would go something like this: "Good morning, this is Captain Steve...I'll be arriving on XX date at 1330 hours and I need billeting for one." "No problem Captain, SIR, we'll have quarters available for you SIR, your reservation/confirmation is YSK4, SIR."

Ahh...the joy of misinformation.

Steve

Uh.... Guilty!
Let's just say I got some great perks on occasion when dealing with other service branches and personnel back in the day.

Sometimes the bureaucracy works for you... most of the time it works against you. ;)

For those of us who were around when the TV sitcom M*A*S*H was running, there was a ongoing gag where the Company Clerk was mailing home a jeep - one part at a time. I always thought about that when I found myself rewarded by the bureaucracy, procedures, and confusion of the "machine."

Agreed, whether it's CAPT or Capt, MJ is always civil, thoughtful and insightful and just top notch.

A one star for @Devil Doc is like me saying I'm a full bird. ;)

100mph winds. Sustained for 15 hours across 3 states. Had no idea when we started the day, that this could happen. Caught completely off guard.

> Not completely off guard -- From my office window, I watched it grow and approach for an hour. Was actually pretty cool to watch from the 8th floor with a great view west. My windows were flexing ..... (and no, wasn't smart enough to go to an interior space !),

I'm still out of power ..coming on 72 hours now --which equates to 6 generator fill ups ! (I have had this generator for almost 10 years now, and up until this week had about 20 hours on the meter (running it for a little while every 6-9 months). It's earned its keep this week, but I'm ready to get back to normal .

Im actually still shook up and in a bit of denial and awe about it all. Mostly the part about not having any idea. Part of that, was I was at my daughters (Post surgery help...that was fun getting her and her pregnant self down to the basement) and she streams her TV service. So no sirens or notice on there. I really think that’s what bothers me most. Hurricanes, tornados, heck...even hail/thunderstorms I have my eye on. With watches, etc. But I was woefully unprepared for this. We also lost cell and internet. So communications were down. And those winds were sustained for 45 mom’s. It must be like a hurricane. Still without power all over. Thankfully ours came on.

We have a generator as well. But if HASNT been run every 8-9 months. And of course is all rusted and wrecked. Our new one arrives on the 21st. Thankfully our neighbor ran us an extension cord from theirs And we saved the fridge stuff.

Praying farmers especially. Lost crops, equipment, cattle, pigs, homes. I mentioned 10 million acres of agriculture destroyed. Food prices will be affected.

It’s almost funny but it’s not - every severe storm, flooding, tornado, etc. alert, both of our iPhones go off with alarms, the house security system, and the TV if it’s on. I also have alerts set up with the county emergency management. USAA sends me texts afterward to see if I’m all right and need to make claims or ask for assistance.

For those who haven’t done it on iPhone:

Settings>Notifications
Scroll to Government Alerts at the bottom and make your selections.

The 2012 derecho is the one I experienced.

It was very hot after the 2012 derecho and we had no power. I went to the 7-11 for ice and they were cash only because their power was out. I had cash so I walked out with three bags while the cashless hoards in the parking lot eyeballed me as I got in my truck and drove off. The power was still off so my wife got a room at the Holiday Inn. I drove there with her to help her get settled in plus I needed some AC. I was going to go back and suffer at the house to make sure my dog made it ok in the heat. My son called while I was still in the hotel room. I said, “What are you doing?” I’m at home watching the Braves. On TV I said. The power is on I asked. Yep.

My wife said, I’m staying. I’ll be home tomorrow after I check out.
