Best Place to Eat on or Near the Yard?

As a breakfast lover, I must say that Chick & Ruth's Delly is one of my favorites. Their corned beef hash is good.

As a lover of Cuban sandwiches, O'Brien's Oyster Bar & Seafood Tavern (I know, it makes no sense) makes a great one, with tater tots on the side.
Have you ever had a Cuban sandwich from a gas station in Miami? Some of the best I have ever had. Tropical Cafe at the Exxon station at the corner of 41St Street and 97th Ave (Doral), right around the corner from SOUTHCOM.

I like the oysters (in season) at O'Brien's..

The Seafood club at Chick and Ruth's is really good. It is a crab cake and shrimp salad! Oh, and the corned beef hash is to die for.

Before DW ordered the “We’re not missing the Amish Market” detour, we were headed for Chick & Ruth’s, where I was going to order corn beef hash (extra crisp, please) with eggs over-easy and wheat toast. Dowwww! Made do at the Amish Market with a pretzel dog, cheesesteak log and rib log. 😅

Speaking of Amish Market, I took our sponsor plebes there last Saturday, their first visit. I gave them a recon, then stowed them in the fresh pretzel and log line for re-fueling. Meanwhile, I got us a round of fresh fruit smoothies, and we “set” in some rockers outside. There were moans of delight. We then re-entered the store, where I gave them 30 minutes and a $20 to choose desserts for that night. They chose well: half a red velvet cake, mini key lime cheese cakes, and a chocolate peanut butter pie. There were also bags of “study snacks” - they had mined the multiple varieties of fruit yogurt flavor coated pretzels, the trail mixes, and other assorted treats. And yet another hot pretzel to split in the car going to the house…

Oh for my former 18 year old metabolism!

We must agree to disagree then. For me. it has to be eggs over medium (hot runny yolks but completely cooked egg white because uncooked runny egg white is disgusting to the point of being downright Communist), corned beef hash, bacon (of course, unless it's a Jewish deli and I remain happy with the corned beef hash) and rye toast. The toast must be rye and rye it must absolutely be! :)

Shall I go on?
Three plebes and us:

- two 3.5 lb boneless pork loin roasts (3 slices left)
- 2 half foil catering trays of Thanksgiving dried fruit, chopped apple and pecan cornbread dressing, as it is my custom to make triple dressing batches and freeze as a side for roasted white meats over the winter
- 1 qt homemade gravy (none left)
- 1 dozen ears fresh corn on the cob, not sure from where, but pretty darn good for February
- plate of carrot, celery, red pepper strips, etc. and bacon ranch
- Amish desserts!

I'm sure the pretzel dogs were great and all...but it sounds like you came out on the losing side of that trade @MidCakePa ;)

Hopefully this doesn’t make anyone mad, but Buddys Crabshack sure doesn’t seem to be what it used to.

The crab soup (bisque?) from Federal House is a fav of our entire family. Even as a ‘to-go’ for a later snack. And a drop off to my Mids.

Other than that, I 100pct second the Amish Market. And Chick and Ruth’s for a Sammie. Or good breakfast.

After living there for years, and working at Fran O'Briens (now O'Briens) for a bit after leaving the Academy while I had an apartment in Eastport, I was sick of almost all of the restaurants there! Luckily, it has been a while since I've really eaten downtown.

One of the better places I have gone in the last 10 years would have to be Osteria 177. Italian place on Main Street. Food was excellent (and I'm a wine snob and they had a good selection).

Forget Plebe sponsor mom, I think I'll need Capt MJ as a Parent Sponsor Mom for when DW and I come to town! :) I may have gained a pound or two just reading that. In all seriousness, I am going to advise my son to put down Capt MJ on the sponsor form. Not sure if the SAF username will work, but heck it's worth a shot.

I was thinking the same thing! 😂

I'll second the Big Cheese for a quick lunch, but it's a grab and go sorta place. We like to take the sandwiches back to the benches along the waterfront on the yard - weather depending of course!

The Alley on the Yard is pretty good (and convenient), but looks like they're not open for lunch right now.
