Today marks the 40th anniversary for me and my USAFA '83 classmates reporting to the Academy to start BCT . . . 1,516 of us arrived at the base of the ramp on 25 June 1979 . . . Four years later on 1 June 1983, 956 of us crossed the stage to graduate . . . 36.9% attrition rate.

Best Wishes and good luck to the incoming group that will become the USAFA Class of 2023 . . . you have earned a "lotto ticket" that will provide tremendous opportunity . . . it will NOT always be fun . . . but it will be a very different college experience . . . do your best . . . learn from all those around you . . . remember why you chose to go to the Academy . . . keep focused on the end goal . . .

Cross that bridge & get on that bus!!

Unfortunately, as of a year or two ago, the new basics do not cross the bridge until the end of BCT.

My ’16 son’s father-in-law is one of your classmates. I’ll check in with him to see if he did anything to mark the day. He probably played a quiet round at the Academy golf course – a marked change from his first day on base 40 years ago.

In case you were wondering ... yes ... I’m in the picture ... ;)
He's the younger guy...

Although...he doesn't look like that now...well, he's just as lean...but that's it. :D
(said his classmate who is neither as lean nor as young looking...)

Very cool of you to share this history, I have a DS at BCT, the amount of pride and patriotism I felt last week walking the grounds was incredible, thank you for laying to footprints for them to follow!

Thank you, I guess my classmates and I are sort of “history” now ... :)

But we look to the 25 classes that came before us ... all beginning with the Class of ‘59 ... those gentlemen laid the foundation
