What would look better for my son 1) 24 hours of flight school at a local Community College Flight school will give a brief overview f flying, safety protocols and 4-6 of flight/Stick time. Or 2) or Acceptance to the NC Governors School for Music. NC Governor’s school is month long training at an elite school only for those who are exceptional in their field. my son , last year )10th grade) has been selected as All District Percussion player and came in second as All-State in percussion and is in the running again this year. He really wants to fly and was told by a recent Graduate and Naval Pilot to get as much stick time as possible. Flight school is happening at the same time as NC Governors school for music.

From this crusty old ALO's perspective, a question: which is HE more interested in?

If flying is his passion, and he's willing to forego anything to fly, then you have your answer. However, if his passion is music but he also wants to go to the academy...again, I think you have your answer.

What looks best is an activity in a field, where passion, dedication, leadership, teamwork/team building occurs.

Couldn't he do the highly select Governors School and maybe take flying at a local FBO on weekends or ???

Just my $1.08 "XL Polar Pop" thoughts...

Honestly, it depends on what the rest of his application looks like. Which one balances the weakest part? The application process favors a candidate with some strength in all areas.

Flieger83 has a great suggestion to get the flight hours in a different way. Check out EAA’s Young Eagles program to see if there are any participating pilots in your area. He could get a couple of hours of stick time and learn a lot.

If you have to explain the significance, the nuance could be lost in a 60 second records review. The flying hours show commitment to the career field and alignment with the school and the branch of service. In my opinion, the flying time is more easily understood in an admissions setting.

Both would be unique on a student resume.

If worded correctly, you can communicate the significance of the Governor's school, but the wording would be tricky IMO.

I understand usurp point. I elaborated on NC Governors school because most know what flight school is and some may not know what the NC GOV is, so I figured it would expound in it. Hopefully the reviewing board knows what it is. He was also thinking depending on the schedule if of it all, that he would
Like to be in the USN or AF band at school. He wants to fly but loves music.

Regarding credentials, send proofs to admissions office such as certificates and diplomas. With DS, the admissions called the school to verify the certificates.

To be selected as a sophomore for this honor is pretty awesome...this is a one time opportunity while flight school is offered any time. Also what if he is applying to civilian colleges...i think the music opportunity would be "better' .

My DS was an All-State musician on French horn and mellophone (marching all-state). It would've been a no-brainer decision for him...music first no questions asked. He, btw, ultimately turned down his USNA appointment and is very happily ensconced in a state university studying Civil Engineering and playing in the marching (and later, pep) band. During the whole application process, he mainly put things on his EC's that were important to HIM, that way, when it was time for interviews, he could expound freely and enthusiastically on his interests/education. Let him figure out his own application. ;)
