Between BCT and Classes

At the C store bookstore they are allowed to put the cost of books on their loan. I suppose they can do this all four years. My DD did it her first semester and then went elsewhere for her books. Most classes require that you have all your books on the first day. She did at times have to purchase a book through the C store but was able to return them when her other books were delivered. As long as they were in "new condition" they were accepted without question. If a friend had the same book/class and purchased it already they shared if in different classes. Many of the books for freshman year can be garnered from sophomores (C3C's), they are more than like happy to get rid of them.

The C-Store got a little more strict on their return policy in the last couple years...

Do the C3C's sell their used books to the C4C's? I'd think that there would be a good market for decent used books.

Yes. Just make sure the book hasn't been changed or updated for the course.

DD has done the C-store return for at least the last two years at USAFA. She will graduate in May. She is a bit of a book snob/purist however-you can never tell if she has read a book because the spine is never cracked and the cover is like the day she bought it. She looks for the best covers in any book store and they remain looking new. She sells her textbooks to other cadets usually (at least the ones in her major since it is a small department). She rarely lends out her books because she doesn't like the condition they are returned in. She also absolutely hates the idea of an e-reader (even though I have one and have tried to sing its virtues).

My DD took some monies with her to BCT. There may be a lapse of time between the setting up of your automatic deposit to your checking accounts. So.. I would highly recommend bringing some money to carry you over if necessary for snacks and or personal items.

How much down time is there between bct and classes?

Schedule for 2014-15 just released. http://www.usafa.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-140331-022.pdf

There is an amazing 10 days (!) between end of BCT and first day of academics on 13 Aug. There is time for transition to squadron, military training, and academic transition.

4-degs don't get "down time," and it reads like the Comm and Supt are going to keep the Wing busy.

Note that Thanksgiving Break starts after academics on Tuesday.

Does anyone go home for any period of time between BCT and classes?

Not unless there is a family emergency. They will have plenty to keep them busy. As was posted earlier there will be training of some kind going on. This is not a traditional college. There will even be weekends during the academic year that you will have training and are required to attend.

There might be more than a few Cadets staying in COS for Thanksgiving Break I'm afraid. Not sure why this is the new system, its not like State U where everyone is a hop, skip, and a jump to home. Big expense for a few days across the country for some imo. As a parent I haven't gotten my mind around it yet.

Do fourth class cadets get to choose their own? or is it by default through squadron? (I have a good friend there now)

The coach is in their squadron and they don't get a choice. In some squadrons they may get to choose their roommate after BCT but in many they don't. The females usually have few choices because there are only 4-5 per squadron.

Those who stay thanksgiving are the IC athletes. Most all others go home. If there are no classes Tuesday and it is 'LMD'. (last military duty) then it likely will be early morning they can leave but you never know. We ALWAYS book Southwest. That way they can change the flight and no be penalized. Booking the Sunday flight back is most important. Tuesday shouldn't be crowded.

Hi. I'm new here. Really appreciate all the posts.
When you book Southwest you need to book out of Denver, correct? Is there a regular shuttle that goes to the Denver airport from the academy? Also, any tips or suggestions on best time to book?

I don't think SW flies into/out of Colorado Springs. My son always books SW out of, and into Denver.

During holidays and breaks there will be shuttle service from USAFA to Denver and back. I think it's $20 ea way or $30 round trip. You can also get rides from the cadets with cars. Usually a gasoline donation is appreciated. There are also private shuttles, limos and taxis....but they are very expensive....especially if you are by yourself.

As soon as you know your leave dates and LMD. SW sometimes has "You want to get away" deals so you might want to look out for those. Try to book your return flight to arrive at least 3 or 4 hours before your required time.....to allow for delays. USAFA expects you to make a reasonable effort to be back by your reporting time.
