So, DS is in college and we have promised him that we would not open any correspondence from the Naval Academy without his permission. We have received an 8 1/2 by 11inch manila envelope, return-addressed from the Dean of Admissions, that contains a dark blue hard-covered item (slight rip in the envelope). My guess is that it is a Navy award/citation folder. There are also some soft items in the packet that make the envelope slightly deformed/irregular (i.e., it is more than just the hard-covered item). Is that THE BFE? If not, any ideas as to what it might be? Dying of curiosity.... help out DS' parents, if you can.

You're a better parent than I! I'd be steaming that sucker open. Hope he's coming home this weekend. If its not in his plan I expect he'll change them once you call him. Congrats!

Congrats to your son and family! When my son came home and saw the envelope he told me he knew right away what it was after he gave it a gentle squeeze. He told me there is someone on Facebook who has described the BFE, how it feels and and what's inside. There even pictures of what the award binder looks like on the cover and the contents of it. Gotta love the internet....
Cheers!

It sure is.:shake:
My DS is at University and received his last week.
Congratulations!!

College applicants must be being reviewed now. DS received a call from our Congressman's office Tues. that he had received an appointment and would be receiving a letter soon. DS had also said previously not to open anything, but to send it to school. He says now I can open the BFE and mail him copies. I haven't told many people about it yet since we don't have it in hand yet.

So EngSSN754 did DS let you open it?

He is now going to be what I call, The best and brightest in the country. Way to go to all of you.

Congratulations.

Time to get out the bubble wrap.

I'm not sure him being away is a benefit or not? When my DD got hers she was still at home and I worried about every little thing. But at least I could make sure the wrap was on tight. Being away might have been less stressful...but then again I'd be wondering if she was staying wrapped up at all times.

Envelope Arrives!

My DS has patiently been waiting and "the envelope" arrived in Tuesday's mail. I couldn't wait for him to get home from bball practice so I opened it carefully and there it was: the blue binder! The real journey begins!

Thank You!

OK. So, since I started the thread, I feel compelled to answer and tell you the transpiration of events.

First of all, thanks to all who responded, especially to PopeyesMom, USNR1315 and FlyingG who provided us with very prompt and sufficient assurance that this was what we all were looking for and, thus, reduced the stress level and anxiety for DW and me.

So, DS, whose birthday is tomorrow, is a freshman at the University of Denver – about a 45 minute drive from our house. After reading your posts, DW and I strategized on what to do. Do we surprise him right away or do we wait until the weekend (when he was going to come home anyway) and wrap it up and include it with his other presents? We decided on a hybrid approach. One of the teasing points that we have used in the past was a threat to show up at school unannounced to make sure that he was behaving himself. So, we did just that. We went down there on Thursday night, using some lame excuse that we were passing by, coming from some meeting and we figured that we should stop in and “see him”. DW wrapped the unopened BFE in paper and put it into a large box, along with some care package items (e.g., Girl Scout and chocolate chip cookies – I DID NOT GET ANY!!!). He saw the box right away and asked what it was. We told him that it was an advanced birthday present; since we knew that he’d had a rough week, this was encouragement. So, he opened the box and salivated over the cookies. Then he reached the BFE and tried to guess what it was before opening it (shook it, squeezed it, etc.). He pulls off the wrapping, sees the manila envelope, looks at the return address, and his face lights up. The best part about the evening (aside from his immediate reaction) was the fact that it was completely unexpected. Neither he, nor DW nor I, were expecting an appointment to arrive until late February or March, if it was going to arrive at all. We have pictures of the excitement.

Many thanks to all who have provided such helpful information as we traversed the path to an appointment! And best of luck to all who are still stalking the mailman – ours can finally deliver mail in peace.

As you've so colorfully created and shared, there are few lifetime scenarios more joyful than ones like yours. Always wonderful, never forgotten.

Cograts and well done for all. Most often, great team effort!;:thumb:

BFE arrived too!!

Love the story. That was great.
The BFE arrived at our house today. DS knew is it was being put in the mail so there was no surprise there. The surprise was getting a call from the congressman's office on Tuesday. We also didn't expect to hear anything for awhile. He is 5 hours away so i can't bring it to him to open and I don't want to put the original in the mail. Anyone have any ideas on how to make it special?

Maybe opening it via skype?
