BGO assigned by School or Home address

I have searched this site and couldn't find this answer. We even called USNA admissions and asked the question but the young man that answered wasn't sure either. DS attends boarding school out of state. Does anyone know if the BGO would be assigned by his school address or our home address?

I do not know but my guess would be home as that is where he will be applying from. Bet they coordinate though so he can work with one near school.

It depends solely upon what address he gave on his preliminary application (and ultimately, the actual application after he gets his Candidate number). So whatever address he gave on the application will dictate which BGO is assigned to him.
More than likely, the BGO will live within a 20-minute drive of you.

Usually, it is by High School. As a BGO, I am assigned all candidates from a specific set of High Schools. That said, I have also had College Students who attend school elsewhere but live within the area for one of my schools. I have seen this used for out of area boarding schools as well. You can find out for sure by contacting the Area Coordinator for your state/region of state. Their contact info can be found on the USNA website by searching for Area Coordinator.

Thanks. The home address makes sense except for having to (hopefully) schedule an interview while he is at school. It would be better to have the interview where he is in school versus flying home for the interview but we will do what is required. Thanks folks.

BGOs have been known to have phone or Skype interviews for this and other reasons (candidate not in the U.S., for instance).
There is no rule that states that a BGO interview has to be in person. It's easier that way, but not as important as you may think.

Flying home for a BGO interview isn't something that most BGOs would ask you to do.
I would say that when it gets to be that time, either time it with a visit home, or see if he can be interviewed when at school (by a different BGO). The BGO uploads the interview form or checklist (or whatever it is that they fill out) to USNA. The Academy doesn't care which BGO it comes from. They just check the box and record a date, that it's been completed.

In my experience, BGOs are extremely helpful and understanding.

BGO's are initially assigned by Schools, i.e. if a BGO is assigned to that School, the BGIS system will assign the candidate to the applicable BGO. If there is no BGO assigned to the particular school, the Area Coordinator will assign the candidate to a BGO, usually based upon proximity. If the candidate is out of the area (college reapplicant or some other reason), an Area Coordinator can reassign to another BGO within the state , or can coordinate with Admissions and have the candidate reassigned to an out of state BGO.

More than likely, the BGO will live within a 20-minute drive of you.
Not really.....my record is about 4 hours. (I live in a largely rural state, and the BGO's are usually gr0uped in the larger Metro areas).

And I live in a less densely populated area within a very densely populated state but my schools vary in distance and do not include the two or three schools closest to my home. At one point, approx 10 yrs ago, there were three other BGOs living within two miles of me and we had schools across a fairly wide area.

+1 to THParent. Welcome to the 21st century! :) I don't know how we would live with our son being in Okinawa for the past 1.5 years without video calls every few weeks, and we use nothing more complicated than facebook messaging. Technology is wonderful! Until it gets hacked by the Russians! :D

In most areas, BGOs are assigned by h.s. There may be a BGO assigned only to home-schooled students. But there can be exceptions. Some of my candidates live 5 mins away and others closer to an hour. My guess is that he'll initially be assigned to the BGO where the school is located, but as Old Navy states, he could be reassigned if it's more convenient for him to meet with his BGO while at home. Or do Skype, which is increasingly common for BGO interviews and MOC interviews.

Note that his legal residence for MOC purposes will be his parent(s)' address, regardless of where he goes to school.

@SAparent2023 My boarding school son was assigned a BGO from our home state. He and his BGO agreed that it might be helpful to have the BGO be in the same state as his high school, but we were never able to get a transfer initiated by his Admissions Officer at usna. In the end it worked out just fine, but did mean that he did his BGO interview by phone and parents were not a part of that interview.

Our son attended boarding school 2500 miles from home. His Army FFR was local to his boarding school. His Navy BGO was local to our home, so I'm not sure why the disparity in assignment. However, we think proximity and involvement of the FFR was what eventually made him choose Army over Navy (his first choice when he started the process).

DD attended boarding school. Her BGO was from her school region. Had a phone interview over the summer as she had finished her application July 1st and would not have been local to meet.
