Hello All,

I recently received a congressional nomination to the USNA, which is awesome. However, I have procrastinated my BGO interview because I was highly focused on my USAFA application. I have about a month to conduct an interview with my BGO, but they have yet to respond to all of my emails requesting an interview. What should I do about this?

Where do you stand on your application? Your BGO is generally watching to see when you complete all of the teacher recommendations, CFA, etc. Do you have all of that done and in yet?

Also, what is the timeframe you are referring to with “all of my emails” comment? Are you are talking about a month, or a week? If the later, it could be that they haven’t seen them yet. Perhaps traveling for the Holidays? Entertaining family? It’s a busy time of the year.

I would suggest calling them, if you have their phone number.

I have completed everything but my CFA, DoDmerbs is still processing though.

This issue may depend on exactly what you did or did not do to cause the procrastination. Interest and enthusiasm is important and goes to "motivation" to apply, which BGOs are interested in and required to evaluate. Please describe what you did or did not do ?

Your BGO will contact you sometimes, be on the lookout for his/her email. For me i got the email before christmas and got the interview done last week

I would also say to contact USNA, when I applied my first year I had to drag USNA into it because I couldn't get ahold of my BGO.

Back when my DS applied, his BGO would not do the interview until everything, including the CFA was done. I think some BGOs want to be able to look at the candidate to evaluate how they have done on everything and see if they are truly motivated to get everything in before wasting time on candidates who may not even complete the process or the minimum requirements. Not all BGOs are like this and they each have their own timeline for doing their interviews.

I’d also wait until it gets uncomfortably late before calling some type of supervisory authority. Sometimes, it is warranted, but BGOs have lives outside of helping candidates and some of the older ones aren’t always the best with technology. Calling Big Brother when it isn’t warranted can put a sour mood on things. If you’ve been application complete and have been reaching out to no avail, call Admissions. Better yet, call the Area Coordinator first. Chain of command is a very big thing in the military and it’s not a good look if you jump it. Sure, there are extraordinary circumstances where it is okay, but those are few and far between. If it was a one-time email and and no reply after a week or so, then you have to try and reach out a few more times.

BGOs really should not be trying to evaluate how they have done, just whether or not it has been done. Admissions is who actually looks at the SAT scores, transcripts, etc. I don't actually look at or ask about any of that. I'll ask about run times or completion of CFA to judge motivation but not as a judgement of the candidates qualifications.
Also, the guidance in most BGO areas is to set up interviews when they are 50%-75% complete with the application. Waiting till they are at 100% will get the BGO on the naughty list.

OldRetSWO is correct...but also understand that Candidates often go from 20-100% complete in a very short time period. Don't expect the BGO to drop everything to accomodate an interview if the Candidate has procrastinated for 6 months. This happens a lot at this time of year -- candidates see the deadline coming, and finally get their act together and apply. If this is you...be prepared to tell the BGO why you waited until the last minute.
