Hi quick question -

I just got an email from my BGO telling me that, as I am in Chicago at Christmas (I fly in 7 days woooooo!!!:biggrin::biggrin:) it would be "to my advantage" to conduct the interview face-to-face.
Firstly, this is probably amazing! Especially seeing as she is the BGO for Americans abroad and therefore I will be one of few of the 217 candidates she has that'll get to have a face-to-face and not a phone interview.

But she lives in Maine, and for her to travel to Chicago during the holidays for my BGO interview from all the way up there seems exaggerated to me.

So should I offer to meet halfway or something? I have no idea where I'd stay though, and if my dad knew the reason I would expect him to lock me in my room.

Ideas?

If the offer of a face to face interview has been made then this is a good thing. Take advantage of it.

I would clarify with your BGO if she intends to meet you in Chicago or do you need to meet her elsewhere. Let her tell you what is acceptable to her and go from there.

Best of Luck!

Frankly, I would be surprised if she will travel to Chicago as BGOs typically have no budget for travel and are not reimbursed for it (at least not that I've ever seen). However, given the unique situation with this BGO, her status may be different (for example, I would guess she'd be reimbursed for overseas calls).

Second, you would not be expected to travel to her location if it isn't convenient for you -- IOW, you will not be viewed negatively if you can't do it b/c USNA recognizes that many overseas candidates are not able financially or otherwise to get to the US, let alone the BGO's location. If you can do it (financially and time-wise), that would be great.

Third, if she is willing to meet you half-way, so much the better. Boston might be a good solution as it's driveable from most of southern Maine (where most Mainiacs live) and is an easy flight from almost anywhere in the US. But again, if you can't do it, it won't be viewed as a negative.

I agree with MIDNDAD -- tell her your plans and see what she suggests.

Perhaps she intends for a different BGO (not her) in Chicago to conduct the interview.

Yes, they are!!

So yeah, the Interview would/will be in Chicago with the local BGO!
(--> would that mean she is no longer my BGO then??? :frown:)

She says she let me know if she can arrange something.

Thanks for you help guys!!

look at it this way - you are lucky as you will have two BGO's

More stress maybe, but you have more then just one person telling the NA how dedicated you are. Might be a good thing.

There could be a couple of things happening. I have a couple of BGOs that are salesmen and travel frequently and conduct interviews while on those trips. Additionally, I have made arrangements with BGOs in other areas to conduct interviews for me. This is the case many times with college and prep school students.

Good luck with your interview.

She said that in my case it was because I was an abroad student, that is lucky enough to be in the States so I can have an interview...
I haven't sent in my grades, how could they know I'll be a prep school candidate?!

Katie

Go back and read the previous post - never said YOU were going to be a Prep School candidate. He said many NAPs and Prep school candidates for the Naval Academy - i.e, are currently at NAPS or Prep School are interviewed via phone or another BGO when they cannot physically make it to their assigned BGO interview.
