Hi all, I've read on a few lists on what to bring that some people brought their bibles with them to plebe summer. I'd this something we are allowed to keep for the summer, or would we get them back during parents weekend? Thanks!

From the Class of 2020 Mid's guide:

Please note that the unique training environment of Plebe Summer requires that parents do not visit Plebes during Plebe Summer worship services with the exception of Parents’ Weekend. Candidates are allowed to bring a copy of their chosen Holy Scripture (e.g. Bible, Quaran, etc.), but please do not bring devotional material

See item 26 on page 8 and 9

Mine brought his, but didn't have much time to use it! He attended services on Sunday, but played in the worship band.

He found it more useful when I included bible verses and brief "devotional" types of paragraphs in my daily notes to him.

They used to distribute (they can keep) a Bible on the first Sunday chapel services if a Mid wanted one. Do they still do this? They will have very little time to read the Bible but some will squeeze in a few paragraphs a night.

I thought it interesting that at West Point Beast last summer my son was provided a beautiful Bible. We are Catholic, and I suspect that there was some way that the New Cadets identified their religion. He showed me the bible, and I was surprised at it's high end quality; and also that it was provided. It may have been during Chaplin's Time. Not certain.

USNA used to give pretty nice Bibles. At the end chapel service on the first Sunday we just lined up and they handed them to us. They were bought with donations vice government funds so they could be given to the Mids vice having to be issued and them returned.

I can confirm that the Bibles gifted to USMA new cadets are from donated funds as well. No new cadet has to accept it, though at that point they are so used to doing whatever they are told! If you choose to bring your own religious text of choice (i.e. Bible, etc.) you may keep it throughout summer training. Just don’t go hiding photos or food inside!

My son was delighted. He showed it to us, and I was impressed with the quality. Everything they get there seems to be pretty high end.

I will tell you that a Bible is the only "extra" my plebe took. No photos. Nothing else. He was glad to have it. Many plebes are injured or become sick during plebe summer. When mine caught pneumonia, which is very common during plebe summer, he had several days in his room to recover. The Bible was the only thing he had to read, and he said it was a great source of peace and security. So please, by all means, take it to IDay! I do hope you don't get sick or hurt though!

Oh he had plenty to read... Reef Points, Blue Jackets and fun books like that. Do they get papers during Plebe Summer or they skip that now and just do it online during ac year? Plebes I think still have to be conversational on 3 articles a day. It's to teach you to be up to date in current events and have a conversation on the ward room one day.

Good point, Navy Hoops! I just know he was glad he took it.

As of my plebe summer (2014) we still got paper copies of the Washington Post delivered to our company area over plebe summer, and yes, we had to be conversant in 3 articles. During the AC year we just used the internet.

Sounds like the same from what we had back in the musket days (ok maybe not that long ago). My room mate had to show me how to use the Internet when we got our computers!
