For those curious...
Class of 2020 Billet Night numbers:
245 billets announced (not including 5 international cadets who will return to their home country to serve).
20 billets to Flight School.
10 billets to Sectors.
5 billets to Cyber.
The remaining billets are to various cutters as either DWO (Deck Watch Officer) or EOIT (Engineering Officer In Training).

Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

My DS and I watched some of this last night -- lots of fun to see the cadets jumping and hollering on stage! Could someone give a quick explanation of the difference between a deck watch officer and an engineer officer in training? Which cadets are assigned to which jobs? If you're an engineering major, would you automatically go EOIT?

Which cadets are assigned to which jobs?

Most grads go "afloat" meaning they are assigned to a cutter either as a DWO or EOIT. There is a list of available afloat billets that the 1/c's apply for. Basically, engineering keeps the ship's systems running and deck is responsible for the operational aspects of the ship. An engineering major can apply for a deck postiion if that is his/her interest.

In addition to the response from @rjb, there are far fewer EOIT billets than DWO billets, so selection to an EOIT billet is highly competitive. The EOIT billets are not limited to only engineering majors, as other majors can also include those billets on their dream sheet. A few years ago, a government major received an EOIT billet. In simple terms on a cutter...an EOIT fixes it, a DWO drives it.

@alaska66 I noticed that there are only 5 billets for Cyber. Do you have any insight if that number will increase over time? And can you direct me to a resource to learn how the Cyber arm of CG is growing? I really have zero idea how this works, and want to be sure to support a realistic expectation with DS.

The Cyber major only began with the Class of 2022. Perhaps the number of Cyber billets will increase when that class reaches graduation. Billets vary from year to year, and are based on the needs of the service. For example, some years there have been 10 or less Flight School billets. The Class of 2019 and 2020 both had 20 billets for Flight School. Next year, that number may be smaller. I would guess that Cyber would have the same fluctuations in number of billets.
If you would like to discuss the Cyber program, I would recommend you reach out to the head of the department:

@alaska66 This is great information and very helpful! Thank you so much!

Is there such thing as a billet to do something such as MSRT? Or is it grouped together with cutter billet or is it only after an initial tour?

There is not - you have five options following graduation - Operations Afloat (Cutter), Aviation, Cyber, & Operations Ashore (Prevention or Response options). Those last three make up MAYBE 5% of the class so you're talking maybe 10 cadets out of the entire class. The closest to MSRT is Ashore Response - Law Enforcement. You can find more info on Ops Ashore here: https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/...reer_Guide_2015.pdf?ver=2017-06-16-142233-273

You can apply for a MSRT billet starting your second tour. Make sure you also do some research on the CG Tactical Law Enforcement Teams (TACLETs), there are also the CG Maritime Safety & Security Teams (MSSTs).
