I posted a vague question about this awhile back but didn't get a specific response so I'm creating a thread. . . I want to buy a pair of binoculars for when we come to drop off DS at Indoc but I have no idea what to get. I tried to do some research but it's overwhelming. If anyone could share some ideas I sure would appreciate it!

I was looking at 10x42 size but I have no idea if that is decent or not.

What are you going to use them for? To spot him in a crowd?

There is a TON of information on google - as general, or specific as you care to get.

    https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/binoculars.html

    https://www.opticsplanet.com/howto/how-to-choose-binoculars.html

    Here's a start:

Things to consider: purpose, size, weight, quality, magnification level and objective lens diameter are all important choices.

Personally, I would not recommend a magnification power greater than 10 as anything higher is very hard to hold stable.

I used a pair of 7 x 35 for years and was very happy with them.

Even with binoculars, prepare to be disappointed in yourself as a mother when you cannot recognize your own DS... Once they all have their haircut and are dressed the same, it is pretty overwhelming.

I am prepared for that, kpmom! But I want to be prepared to see him just in case, as well. :)

$20 or less. Go to Walmart. You won’t mind lending them out when you see all the teary-eyed moms and dads at Indoc. Have your DS/DD wear something recognizable so you can pick them out.

I've said before that our son was extremely easily recognizable because of what he inadvertently wore: long button down shirt and khaki trousers. We were not only able to pick him up immediately, but could follow him easily as well. Wearing just a different color polo shirt or something can help you spot your son (girls are easier to spot.) I would NOT recommend a loud Hawaiian shirt or similar, for obvious reasons! But, take a good look at what his shoes, shirt and bottoms look like and there's a great chance of spotting him. We have great photos and videos just by chance.

Oh, and like @WI-Dad20/21 mentioned, lending your binoculars to other parents are a great way to meet and they will very much appreciate the loan. :D

If you wear glasses do a little bit of reading online before you purchase one. I was always frustrated using DH binoculars since I wear glasses and he doesn't. But, he did some research and found a great pair that works well for both of us. Don't ask me to explain it in technical detail but I'm sure that google can supply everything you need to know.
