Hi! My son will be celebrating his b-day during plebe summer. I have read past threads regarding sending b-day -packages and reviews seem to be mixed. I am wondering if anyone had an experience recently and if I should send a package with snack for group or something individual so he is not 'noticed". Either way I think it will be harder for me not to be with him to celebrate his '18'th birthday. Thanks!

Celebrate it during the parent weekend, if you are attending. I personally will allow no mention of my 18th birthday until it has passed (it's at the very end of the summer).

Unless he's feeling lucky, punk. Anything that makes mention of his birthday will probably get some attention he might not want. Not that it wouldn't be all in good fun.

Sam9080 - It depends on who his detailers are and how far into the summer his birthday is. I would probably wait and ask him on the first phone call. He'll know better than anyone on this forum whether or not it's a good idea. I agree with Jett, PPW will be a good time to take him out for a special dinner to celebrate!

As a fellow appointee, I wouldn't want any kind of package, aside from a letter, during plebe summer, birthday or not. As already mentioned, his detailers might not treat him like it's his birthday (think maybe birthday punches in sets of push UPS and extra work). I wouldn't even send a birthday card-shaped letter. This is just my opinion though, and you should definitely talk to him about it.

Also, you should just wait until the academic year in case I'm his roommate :thumb:

Let's be honest (no, I am not Anderson Cooper)....many plebes have birthdays over the summer. Will a plebe get attention? Possibly, but it isn't that big of a deal and it isn't going to last long. You get MORE ATTENTION for not knowing your rates, physically unfit, or non-team player.

I am not sure what is/isn't allowed these days, in regards to cookies, cakes, etc. (probably not allowed), however, you would stand out more if you didn't send enough of something than the fact it is your birthday.

You aren't going to be mistreated, you aren't going to be dropped for pushups, etc. You DO NEED to learn to laugh at yourself, especially with some of your mistakes or you will find plebe summer that more difficult.

I had to sing a song (based off a nickname someone wrote on the envelope of a letter) to my entire squad at a meal....was it embarassing? Of course! However, it is something I can look back at and laugh on, especially with other classmates -- it is TRULY what makes plebe summer a UNIQUE EXPERIENCE!

You can't always live in fear!
