BOLC dates?

Hanging around a while sounded good at first but last I spoke to DS he was ready to get with it vs part time job, rent, utilities, car payment, insurance, etc. No guard pay since commissioned AD. Perhaps more down down to spend more money or trouble find you or get you derailed??? By your profile I would think you are in Charlie town would you go home or stay there? Have you checked rent in Charlie town and a year lease? Just saying..... But I could see some may want some chill time.

Getting your life straighten out for 2nd Lt life?????...... I would think you better be well on your way of having this done by Commissioning time. Army will probably juggle your adulthood time for you :) I guess different strokes for different folks but I think DS is ready to face the new opportunities in front of him......

I was referring to getting a short term job in order to pay off student debt, build credit, have a history of income, etc, not to solely be drinking money. As I do not have car, I figured I'd need one as a 2LT and a period of time between commissioning and BOLC would be a good time (at least in my humble, naive opinion) to obtain one (auto loans require income and usually credit). The lease I mentioned referred to finding a good place to live wherever you do BOLC if it's a long term PCS or similar, I've heard of plenty of folks having to live off base for BOLC or their first "real" duty station at least, I think I would like the extra time to make sure I got a good deal on a place, or at least research where you'll be living. To answer your question, I'm personally looking to go home so I can have some time to get all my ducks in a row; make sure I know when I can make loan payments, get a car, etc. I can't stand Charleston, personally, but that's a different story. If you have nothing really on your plate after you graduate, then I don't see the downside of getting paid sooner, but many folks I'm sure may have some business they'd want to take care of either at home or elsewhere before they ship off.

DS got his date yesterday (3/19). 6Dec report date to Ft. Benning/AR. He's pretty excited and probably would have been happy to leave a little earlier, August/September, but did want some time at home and has a job here to earn a little cash while waiting to leave. His upside to leaving in winter -- Benning is hotter than hell in the summer, he was there 3 years ago for basic training;)

Very Cool!! Start Hydrating now, Benning in the summer is very hot place!

Always great advice! Luckily, (or not ?), we live in a southern state that isn't much cooler or less humid than southern GA. Having spent almost a year at Ft. McClellan back in the day, I can attest to the life-sucking properties of the weather down there.

It would seem that the first part of your DS's journey is drawing to a close, well done him. As one chapter of this book comes to a close another chapter starts, this one is full of exciting times for our Guys and Gals.

Glad to hear that dates are rolling in for most people. I guess the information I put out the other day wasn't BS. I'll have to thank my cadre for having some reliable intel for once, lol. Enjoy yourselves prior to BOLC, it will be here before you know it. Best of luck to everyone!!!

Did not mean to "insinuate solely drinking money". And yes by this stage you better have learned and know restraint. The comment just made me wonder how many prefer the quicker the better and how many prefer an extended break. Most I have seen/heard don't like the wait, Good luck to you and future plans.

Back to topic.....DS is still waiting on BOLC dates.

Just wanted to chime in on wanting a break before BOLC.

My son is hoping for a break, 3 to 4 months is what he is wishing for.

My older son left for AVBOLC ten days after graduation, he would have loved some extra time to get things in order. He did not own a car, took the loan and was planning on buying a car when he got home. When he found out how little time he had we started helping him in his search, he was going to college in a small town with littl car buying opportunity. Spent a lot of time sending links back and forth, finally found one and had it purchased before he came home. There was very little time to pack, purchase items, plan a real move, son's BOLC was a PCS move to training that was going to be up to two years, he was moving for the long term on his first move.

He ended up moving with only what he could fit in the back seat and trunk of his Mustang. The travel office was little to no help and his cadre's advice was to just show up and stay in BOQ (Not a good idea).

Son said there was good and bad with going so soon, the good was that you started getting paid sooner, the bad was you had very little time to prepare. Once he was there he settled in and it was no big deal but he still wishes he could have had a little more time. Son was moving from one corner of the country to the other so there was no quick drive back home to pick up what he forgot, just a few trips to the PO and he packed a few extra bags when he came home for leave.

All in all, you go when they tell you and make the best of it, but I think the desire to have some extra time before you leave has much more to do with getting ready, decompressing a bit then it does with wanting spend money or get in trouble, one would hope these cadets are past all that once they graduate.

Son #2 hasn't heard anything in regard to his AVBOLC dates either.

I agree....

DS BOLC July 15 to Ft Sill. So he will have a two month break to decompress and get his packing in order.

Bull I imagine you will be hearing from DS closer to time......

And I can see a short break being good I was more thinking of those that have had longer breaks but I did not relay that clearly , my apologies... I recently heard of one young man that just got in Infantry school that graduated last may. I think he was tired of the wait....

Agreed, I think one would get pretty restless if they had to wait more then 4 months. Son is hoping that doesn't happen, would rather go right away then wait nearly a year, but with Aviation, anything is possible.

July 15th sounds just about the right amount of time. Best of luck to your son.

My son didn't report to IBOLC until Oct 24 and I can tell you he was bored beyond belief at the end and all he wanted to do was get there and get moving!

The long wait finally was over and he is set to graduate IBOLC next Thursday, 3/26. A short 5 days later they have them reporting April 3 for RTAC for two weeks and then he got one of the first spots and reports for Ranger School on April 19th.

I bet he was restless, I can imagine my son would be climbing the walls. I've been seeing Aviation dates being posted as far as Jan. 31st 2016, he's on his way back from a spring break trip and will find out on Monday, he's keeping his fingers crossed for something earlier then what he's been seeing so far.

Congratulations to him on graduating IBOC, best of luck at Ranger School.

Anyone who branched Aviation get their dates yet? Son is on a Spring Break road trip and won't be able to look until Monday.

Been seeing a few on another board have dates as far out as Jan. 31st, now that's a scary amount of time to have to wait. Definitely would be looking for a job for that length of time, might even get a semester toward a graduate degree started.

Congratulations on IBOLC and good luck to your son. As you no doubt know, the Ranger School class starting on April 19 will be the first in history to include women.

One thing to keep in mind with the BOLC dates is that things do happen to others and a few slots may open up. A couple of my son's friends had dates pushed up between getting the slot and graduation. I guess you may want to let your ROTC unit(my son's was very large) know that you would be open to an earlier date.

Have already heard of a couple LT's that had some very one sided counseling because they started a Pool on how long the women will last.

New LT's need to understand that if the Army wants you to have an opinion on duty, they'll issue you one.

Congrats on your son completing IBOLC. Are you going to the graduation? My son completed IBOLC a few years ago. It was a nice ceremony where a family member can put the blue infantry cord around their soldier's shoulder. They had a nice reception afterwards at a country club.

The story of the Infantry Blue Cord goes back to the Mexican War. American officers wore cords of rope around their shoulder. Apparantly some of the Mexican Generals threatened to hang any officers caught. The enlisted men, as a show of support, put a cord of rope around their shoulders as they went to battle.

Best wishes for Ranger Assessment and School.

Benning summer of 2012 was bad, but at least they knew how to continue training in the heat, unlike Ft. Knox last summers LDAC:rolleyes: He'll graduate from BOLC 5/2016

Yep, the future is here and very real. He's home to pick up his dress uniform(Grandma tailored it for him) and graduation is 5/2/15.

The cadets from this forum are some amazing young people and the next chapter will be interesting to see too!:)
