Has anyone read this book? I would be interested in thoughts:
"What it's like to Go to War" by Karl Marlantes

http://www.groveatlantic.com/?isbn=9780802119926
"In 1968, at the age of twenty-three, Karl Marlantes was dropped into the highland jungle of Vietnam, an inexperienced lieutenant in command of a platoon of forty Marines who would live or die by his decisions. Marlantes was a bright young man who was well trained for the task at hand but, as he was to discover, far from mentally prepared for what he was about to experience. In his thirteen-month tour he saw intense combat. He killed the enemy and he watched friends die. Marlantes survived, but like many of his brothers in arms, he has spent the last forty years dealing with his experiences.

In What It Is Like to Go to War, Marlantes takes a deeply personal and candid look at the experience and ordeal of combat, critically examining how we might better prepare our young soldiers for war. "

Karl Marlantes:
A graduate of Yale University and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Karl Marlantes served as a Marine in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation medals for valor, two Purple Hearts, and ten Air Medals. He is the author of the best-selling and prize-winning Matterhorn.

I haven't read "What it's Like to Go to War," but Mr. Marlantes spoke at USNA last year at a luncheon and I was lucky enough to go and get a signed copy of "Matterhorn." Great book that I strongly recommend.

Will add this to my list of books to read. Try "Rise And Fall Of The Great Powers" by Kennedy. Interesting insights from 1500 forward including military overreach and economic penalties.

Just DLed it from Amazon.com to my IPad and started to read it. It is available on Kindle. I'll let you know. Great that there is an IPad App for Kindle. This book isn't available on IBooks but is on Kindle.

I just finished it Bruno. Extraordinary. It ought to be required reading for every commissioned officer, every enlisted man *before* they ever see combat. Someone ought to buy 1500 copies and give them to VMI for its ROTC programs. Yeah, its that good.
