Book Suggestions?

Another great novel that I highly recommend is "The Nightingale's Song" by Robert Timberg.

This novel talks about John McCain, John Poindexter, Jim Webb, Oliver North, and Bud McFarlane and each of their experiences at Annapolis, in Vietnam, and within politics. Not many books have changed my life in the way this one has and I highly recommend that everyone on this forum takes some time to read it.

I got these for my son and had them autographed by the authors. 'Brute: The Life of Victor Krulak, U.S. Marine' by Robert Coram and 'Forgotten Warriors' by T.X. Hammes. They are both on the Commandant's Reading List for major. I mailed Brute to Mr. Coram in Georgia for the signature. Retired Colonel Hammes is a deep strategic thinker on the faculty at National Defense University. He was my CO at CBIRF and now insists I call him T.X. I tried but it sounds like Tex.

I also got him 'Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead' by Jim Mattis. I haven't figured out how to contact General Mattis for an autograph in case anybody has any suggestions.

Just so folks know... you can get a free audiobook of "Brute: The Life of Victor Krulak....", at least via the Commandant's reading list. I was going to buy it for the kid 'cause it's time to start the reading for Major and noticed this. Knowing my kid he'll prefer the audiobook.

One of the best books I have read was The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. Matterhorn and What it is Like to Go to War by Karl Marlantes also make the list. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller is also another great book-however it is very long. I watched the Hulu series on Catch 22 and found it more enjoyable.

Something I found for my DS this Christmas is the official brigade history of his grandfather's unit in WWII. It's in pdf form but I was amazed to find it through a quick google search. I think these were written for many units right after the War and many have become available as free downloads. These are scanned documents so the photos are pretty good. They certainly don't fall into the category of great literature but they are fascinating (and personal) morsels of history.

Adding

For Marine Ground DDs/DSs: ‘Last Stand of Fox Company’, (held a critical piece of road open at Chozin resivor). An almost unbelievable story
