I'm a little confused on what we need to pay for( parents) what they will get taken out of their stipend and what I will need to bring to PW. Any help is appreciated.

They are adults with a job. You don't need to pay for anything. That said, quite a few parents will shower their children with gifts. It's up to you.

I understand they are, but have seen that they have buy books for classes, was wondering how that worked out since many are straight out of high school. I was looking for guidance.

ProudMom,
They essentiallymare given a loan, andnthen overbthe 1st 2 years, it is taken out of their pay.

For pay purposes, they are 'Active Duty'.

Other than showing up at IDay with $250 to hold them over until their first pay day, they are taken care of.

You don't need to be concerned about paying for anything. If an incoming freshman doesn't have enough cash for books (or other essentials) s/he will be able to sign for them and USAF will deduct the money from his monthly stipend. USAFA will provide what s/he needs or the ability for them to "borrow" against future stipends.

As far as what to bring for PW....just yourself and money for whatever you plan to do for food, lodging and entertainment. BTW - books are purchased about a month before PW....usually about A-Day.

Appreciate the info. I had just read somewhere about buying books online was cheaper than at the C shop
etc so wanted it make sure he knew what to expect:smile:

My C3C bought books in the cadet store that first semester and since then, he either buys from other cadets that have already taken the course or buys/rents on-line. The cadet store does not buy back books. Your son won’t have any problem figuring it out once he gets situated.

DS wanted his own printer and monitor. Ordered from Best Buy from home, picked up order in the Springs during PW. Your cadet will know the rules and inform you of what they are allowed to have.

My DD was limited to NO LARGER than a 23" monitor.

What are the rules on the monitor? Can you have any size?

Your cadet will let you know. Besides, what was the rule one year may not be the rule the next. The only thing we know for sure about the future is that it will be different.

My DD has been renting books online from Amazon. Much cheaper then the cadet store and free delivery and free returns. First semester might be tough to order online but for the spring semester you can get the ISBN number off the books you need and find them on Amazon.

A note of caution. When you order books online - make sure they get delivered by the USPS and order early. The post office at the Academy can be painfully slow when you are looking for a package you need by a certain time and the Pak Mail office (Fedex, UPS) can be difficult to get to.

Renting books from Cheg, Amazon ect is a good idea but I wouldn't recommend trying it for the first semester of the Doolie year. It's too hectic and just not enough time (IMHO) to buy online. Starting with the second semester you can usually also buy some books from the other cadets that have either already taken the class or are out-processing.

Good Luck!
