Can someone confirm that Doolies are not allowed (or it's frowned upon) to use any boot except standard issue until after acceptance into the Wing in August (or is it Recognition in March '11) so don't bother springing for (or bringing) a nice pair of Rocky S2V's or similar until then??? In other words, take the 2 pairs of Bellville 650's issued during BCT and wait until later to get anything else!?

correct -- no boots other than those issued til after recognition;
same with low quarter black shoes -- only the (uncomfortable) issued ones

speaking of shoes being uncomfortable, is it suggesting to buy a pair of gel insoles from wal-mart, or even get custom insoles? I heard that usually military shoes have cardboard-style insoles.

I'm pretty sure the issue boots for this year are Wellco. That's what I saw everyone carrying around at orientation. I actually had to go to the base uniform shop to get a pair of Bellville 650s. Supposedly the Bellevilles last longer according to a couple cadets I talked to.

Yes, the Bellville 650 boots look identical to the Wellco USAFA issue boots, and that's what most people prefer compared to the Wellco ones. My roomate's pair of old Bellvilles certainly outlasted both pairs of new Wellcos, but they lose their sage green color very quickly, turning into a dirty dark brown - but you won't be called out by upperclassmen on that.

I'm not sure if insoles are a necessity. If you have trouble with shin splints or something of that nature, I'd recommend Superfeet, but otherwise the insoles that come with the Wellco boots are actually quite soft, and definitely good enough for everyday walking. Second BCT will involve a lot of running in boots though, so you might want to come prepared if you know you'll have trouble.
