Boot recommendations

Hello!

I am currently a firstie, and wanted to weigh in with my boots opinion. I bought the Lowa Zephyr GTX high top boots when I was entering BCT and absolutely loved them! They are higher in price than most options (~$240), but completely worth it. They lasted a long time and were VERY comfortable. Also, much lighter than the ones issued! I loved them so much, that I bought the exact same ones in coyote brown (for the transition to OCPs) and they are like new to this day. Highly recommend! :)

My son has been trying on boots all week and likes these Lowa's the best. His only concern is that the boot might separate at the glued parts during Beast (where the base overlaps the sides of the shoes below the laces). Have you had any "breakdown" problem with the Lowa Zephyr? Also, he tried on the coyote brown. Is that color okay for Beast? You mentioned that color for OCPs, but I wanted to make sure it's also okay for Beast. Thank you.

Hello!

My Lowa’s did not break down or separate until around halfway through my sophomore year. When they did, a hole started to form near the toe section (as far as I can remember). I was very surprised and pleased with how long they lasted. The coyote brown will be the color needed for beast as he will be wearing OCPs. Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have anymore questions!

Thanks so much for your time! Appreciate your insight. He'll be keeping the Lowas for sure!

No problem! Glad I could help. Tell him to work hard, keep his head up, and things WILL get better! He’s got an incredible and amazing path ahead of him with unbelievable opportunities. 😊

I’m looking at the Lowa Zephyr GTX for ds. Two questions;

1.Is coyote brown same as coyote OP ? I’m only seeing this model in OP.

2. Does anyone know a national chain that sells this model. I would like to have him try them on if possible.

Thanks in advance.

1. Coyote is coyote. I don't know what OP means.

2. We bought ours from tacticalgear.com. They offer flat rate returns for $5.99.

I am a prior-preppie, and I always highly recommend the Oakley SI Light Assault 2 boots. You can usually get them $10-20 cheaper on lapolicegear.com. I still use my first pair of these for hiking, and have hundreds of miles in them. Also best boots if you have wide feet. I found the Nike in particular to be very uncomfortable.

DS loves his Under Armor Tactical Loadout. Super lightweight and comfortable. He uses those for rucks and will keep his Rocky’s for FTX.

Can't recall if I mentioned, but DD had a super hard time finding boots small enough for her feet. Super hard to find mens size 4 boots that were available or in stock. Danner actually make a women's boot that she could get in her size. It was the only boots that were small enough. Thought I would mention in case there are others out there with small feet.

Got the boot instructions from USMA today and the boot description says this: "The soling materials will not exceed 2 inches in height when measured from the bottom of the outsole and will not extend up the back of the heel or boot or over the top of the toe."

The Lowa Zephyr GTX soling material does go over the top of the toe, and also goes 3 inches in height when measured from the bottom of the outsole. So I guess that means I can't wear these for Beast after all?

If anyone has insight/clarification on this I'd appreciate it.

I have the Rocky S2V's. They're a little on the heavier side, but they work for me. I like how sturdy they are. They took a bit to break in, but after a couple weeks, they fit perfectly. I wore the issued boots for the courses during Jacks, since they get destroyed. Also highly recommend bring KT blister tape to put on your heels, since the issued ones gave me blisters, and with all the mud, that was fun.
