So, my DS bought boots that he said he is supposed to wear in advance of BCT. But he said that they issue boots when you get there. Why did he have to buy the first pair?

Cadets are supposed to have two pairs of boots for BCT. Appointees have the option to buy a pair and break it in ahead of time; when they get there, they purchase the other pair. If you don't buy boots beforehand, you will need to purchase two pairs at USAF, so many will purchase a model of boots they like and fit well at usually a small premium in price over the issued model.

Got it. Thank you for your reply.

I'll just add that the issued boots are super heavy and pretty uncomfortable since they haven't been broken in at all. Wearing them pretty much makes your feet miserable, so the majority of people buy and break in their own pair to wear to I-Day. Having lighter boots just makes BCT life a lot easier.

DS loves the Nike's. They are lightweight and more comfortable for everyday wear. He did prefer the issued Boots for Jack's Valley and other more strenuous field-based activities. They are heavier but a sturdier boot and waterproof.

Do you have to buy them or are they issued?
You are issued them, but it comes out of cadet pay like all uniforms and necessities. DS brought a broken-in pair and was issued a pair. At PW we brought him the Nike ones and his first pair were pretty ruined from BCT. We just purchased another Nike Pair since their uniform changed.

My DS opted to purchase a good pair of water resistant Garmin and bring to BCT - they were much more comfortable than the issues boots and were his go-to boots for field activities. We brought him his Nike boots on A Day (they are very comfortable, but really did not hold up during for field activities). He only used his issued boot during activities where he thought the boots would get trashed or extremely wet.

To have a broken in pair upon arrival and to insure that at least 1 pair fits. That’s what we were told.
