I know many people have asked, but I am hoping that I get a concrete answer out of this.

I'm hoping many people contribute to this.

My question is: What type of boots do we need for the Academy? What are all the possible avenues of obtaining a pair before BCT?

My son did not get his boots before he arrived. He was issued them on or around I-day. He did not have any problems. His feet were already tough from playing a lifetime of soccer. My understanding from talking to him is that the boots are comfortable. Advantage to not getting them ahead of time is you do not have to carry them with you on I-day. Someone else can comment on getting them ahead of time.

I bought boots at Orientation, but didn't wear them at all to break them in. I have very sensitive feet, and I never got blisters in basic. The boots are comfortable, and there's a break-in time where you wear running shoes part of the day. For me, there were just one extra thing to lug around on I-day.

Here are the USAFA boot requirements directly from the appointee packet and boot depot:

- Sage green in color
- 8-10" in height
- Have a rubber sole
- Have Gore-Tex (or other waterproof lining)
- Not have steel/safety toe
- Not have zippers of any kind

Is the only advantage to buying them ahead of time just breaking them in? Or is there something else?
