Boots?

At least you're not paying up to $40K for a civilian school though.

true. everything you need comes out of your paycheck... no need to worry :) you'll be paying it off for ~ a year or two

Okay well that makes sense. The bad thing about the puke grean boots is that they turn purple when they get wet. My tan boots are already broken in because Im at a military institute now. Is it cheaper to buy them earlier or just let them take it out of you paycheck later?

I'm sure the price is the same. The loan is also no-interest, so you're paying the same amount either at orientation or during inprocessing.

I don't think I've seen mine turn purple, but it's safe to say that neither pair is really green anymore.

Yea I just have a buddy at the Academy and he says that there has been a problem with people boots turning purplish.

purple? well, i may not see it, but even my jack's pair arent purple. just a darker, dirtier green than everyone elses

I've been wanting to purchase some boots to 'break them in' but I have not received any e-mails or letters stating what type of boots to get. Anybody have any idea when I will be receiving this? (I received an Appt. back in the first week of Feb.)

I got an e-mail a while back giving the specifications of what we have to have for boots. They really recommend Belleville 650s (that's what they issue at least) but as long as it matches the criteria, they're fine for wear.
Boots must:
be sage green in color
have Gore-Tex (soft waterproof nylon type material) in soles
have rubber sole (sometimes referred to as Vibram ® outsole)
not have steel/safety toes
not have zippers of any kind
be 8”-10” high

or you could just wait til inprocessing and get them. haha..

most people i know didnt have problems with NOT breaking in their boots before they came. i wore mine a grand total of 2 times before i got here, and had no problems whatsoever.

Modern boots are pretty comfortable for most people. My boots did give me one or two blisters, after running in them. I'm glad I broke them in, but it wasn't a huge deal. (I probably over did it, since they felt better than the running shoes I got on I-day )

In the aforementioned email it was also explicitly stated that waiting until inprocessing to buy boots will NOT put you at a disadvantage, since not all are able to attend orientation.

You will go through a "breaking in" process in the first couple weeks of Beast...

Get them at orientation or wait to get them issued. Really not a big deal.

My boys each got two pairs of boots at orientation and wore them on the plane to I-Day, wrapped around their necks. I think both were glad they'd bought two pairs, especially after one particularly rainy pair of days. It is nice that they don't need to be shined.

they dont need to be shined, but they do need to be cleaned.

i wish someone would sell a decent suede-boot cleaning kit.. the ones at the cstore are terrible

Do all of the classes wear the new boots/BDU's now, or just '12 and onwards?

I'm pretty sure it's much like how the air force is now, it's kinda a choice for those who were originally issued BDU boots. To my knowledge, the ABU boots are not a required part of the uniform since they're still trying to get everyone ABUs. New cadets are issued the sage green boots so that's what they're expected/required to have.
